VOL- I. NO. 31. WHITE PLAINS, WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N. Y., TUESDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1908. PRICE ONE CENT TRUSTEE COMimEE TO MEET EVANGELISTIC MEETINCS «« CRAI1D JURY FINISH lABORS Nothing Definite Done as to Plans for f - Track, Depression Impressive Service at The Memorial M. E. CHarch Last Night ARE HAMPERED BY OUTSIDE INFLUENCE AMERICAN HOMES DISCUSSED VIGOROUSLY Louis Hall, known as \Eatem-up Jack, ” arrested for threatening to ’ shoot a man, was discharged by the Judge because no one ape pa red to press the complaint. Pasquale Verona, arrested for shooting Louis Stell on Christmas Day, and who admitted his guilt, is held for the grand jury. Stell and a third man, Ffynlr Palmerio, were held as witnesses. The trouble, the Italians claim, was not Jealousy over a women or women; but because Meeting To-Day at 3 . P. M. to Discuss the fa ' pending of $500 on Depression Plans “ Home, Sweet Home, ” Sung by Mr. Hillis, . 1 Interests the Audience A meeting of the committee of Trustees appointed to employ an ,en- X-Z l ,lttns f° r a d®' pressed^ffack improvement map relative to the proposed Improve ments of the Harlem Railroad was callpd for, last night but since .there was not* a, quorum present the mat ter was only discussed informally. At the adjourned meeting of tho . Trustees held in the county court rooms some days ago at which citi zens were asked to give their opin ions of the improvements with a view to determining what the people at large wanted this committee was appointed to secure an engineer to prepare plans at a cost not to ex ceed $500 It was practically agreed to en gage Johfi M.* Farley since he had worked on plans along the same lines for the West Side # Civic Club at whose Instigation this motion was made and adopted. The ^committee was to meet last night, since nothing definite has been done, to discuss the advisabil ity of taking up this plan and spend- inf the $500 or to go before the Public Service Commission on Janu ary 18 and fight it out on the 21- foot headway plan. There are other influences at work which ham per the committee £h securing the services of an engineer, but Trustee Rapscht has secured the assent of Messrs. RehVll and Harmon to en- : . v , -gage,Mr. Farlev in the other members of the committee are ^unsclor Barrett *ujd ^ H. ^ , ~T5ykinan. The resolution made by Trustee Harmon at the open meeting of the Trustees empowered tla'-Ulimraittee to engafce an emrinn** to prepare the depression plans and named the cost, but it did not carry any power to treat with any one in the matter or to reconsider anything. It was the sense of the meeting that the plans be prepared and it was regu- ' larly moved- And adopted that these depression pla it be p.» pi ••*<1 tl nt they mlg^t be presented to the Pub lic Service Commission on January 18. John thraii The Sons of Israel will elbet of- fleers on TfiUrWlfty evening, The meeting of the Simultaneous Campaign at the Memorial M. E. Church was well attended lapt night. Dr. Ostrom spoke ” impressively on “ The American Home. ” An interesting feature of the meetings is the singing. The friends who love gospel singing rallied last night and filled the choir laft to overflowing. Mr. Hillis, with his powerful voice, led the singing and sang very impressively at the close of the sermon ‘ ‘ Home, Sweet Home! ” Dr. Ostrom, at the dose of his ap peal, asked the people to bow their heads, and while thus bowed in thoughtfulness, the words “ there ’ s no place like horrie, ” seemed dearer than ever to every one. The speaker had just closed his remarks by an incident in Jennie Lind ’ s life. When she was at the heighth of her ftfmo she was singing in Howard Payne ’ s home town. With her eyes fixed up on the author of these beautiful words, she sang back to him in tha presence of tho groat audience his petter sentiment. Though Howard Payne was a dissipated man, the audience went wild with enttuusiasm. While Mr. Marsh continued to play this beautiful melody softly, Ostrom made an appeal for bet ter homes and prayerful Christian homes. The after meeting was for the of ficials. and with renewed consecra- lon, they all agreed to precede every jpyepXn g a^jitiqrt- jpiayftf, 'service . Dr . Ostrora ’ a sermon dealt vlgof- ously with the home'proTdems and ’ made a lasting Impression. H b said in pqrt: \The Lord Shall Preserve Thy -Going Out and Thy Coming In. ” “ Thy going out to the turmoil, thy coming in to the quiet; thy going on to .the struggle, thy coining In to tke pillow; thy coming In to Mir cherished faces and familiar fates. It was ap advance most distinguish ing when the tribe gave place to the family. When Jenny Lind sang •Home, Sweet Homo, ’ in tho Old Na tional Theatre in Washington, little wonder that the listeners lost them selves in enthusiasm, for she looking Into the face of John How ard Payne as she sang. Pity a man who fools himself no longer capable of homesickness. “ But I pdlnt onl three great en- omics of the home-today. The first is the tendency to make home a place of arrival and uefiaHure with bit to eat and a nap thrown In. It is the sure pledge of doom to the home unless something bo added. Tho second Is the cruel power of divorce. The Chairman of the' Bu reau of Reforms at Washington says Uml -wUb Uio pnt a c . nt m et h o d of. dealing with > marriage about tho only diffrrmrr, between the Ameri- - can and the Turk is the difference b et we en tandem and team would think that If this thing were to continue to develop as it has with in recent years you would soon hear of a map suing for divorce from his wife because she had a tooth ex tracted, claiming that when ho mar ried her he married more teeth. • The third great enemy of the home is the thirst for grandeur the claim can he established that an undue thirst for grandeur is crowd ing out family love, then the home is becoming the prey to a most deadly foe. Whatever threatens the. home threatens you and me* With all yur scientific- adv&seement we have not yet gotten beyond disappointment and death as a people — and where wowld you rather he than in an old- fas&tened Jfij& 111 home ? .m institution Cannot stand mainly for education and fortune.
