White House last spring. Shortly aft er ttye courerence the president ap pointed the commission, which has been engaged ever since in the collec tion of statistics relating to the rate of uso — and abuse, if the statisticians are rightly Informed — of the natural re sources of the United States. Probably the most Interesting fea ture of the meetings will be the pub lication of tbe national inventory, the aggregate of the state Inventories made by* the governors. In it will be listed, as nearly as may be at this time, the natural resources of the Unit ed States — In other words, tho con tents of Uncle Sam ’ s pocketbook. Statistics will be presented to show how soon the old gentleman will be bankrupt If the present rate of con sumption ofFhis wealth Is maintained. In some quarters, notably in the White House, he la considered one of the worst spendthrift^. In the history of the world, and at the meetings of the commission attempts will be made to devise a plan whereby he may be Induced to moderate the rate of ex penditure of his rapidly diminishing patrimony. Unless this Is done he will find himself stripped soon, say tbe pessimists. y Prominent among, the men wba gutli- - ered here to -discus* the problem of conserving our natural wealth are the members of the executive committee of the commission, jrtth Gifford Pln- chot, chief of the bureau of forestry of the department of agriculture, at their head.
