I would like to suggest thaW* one of the greatest vote-getters in the politial life of any country has been none other than the forthright, outspoken President Truman. I believe that if he accepts renomination next year, tipn 'committee of the Chappa- ,qu£ Girl Scout Council, is com pleting, the roster of troop lead ers £orrthis year and emphasizes that \when Girl-Scout meetings, begin the first week in October, his reelection against any candidate will be more overwhelming i&ny girl from fourth thru twelfth than before. f -grades who is interested will be One has a right to be a Republican, or s, a Democrat; and a j welcome at a meeting of her Democrat has a right to be a Dixiecrat or a mugwump. But sue cess at the polls, I believe, will result most likely from clear- cut statements on the issues which confront us all. As the cam paign progresses, I hope that more courageous leadership will bring the position of the candidates on all issues to the voters, something which the candidates and the voters certainly deserve. I repeat, I urge all friends of the New Castle News, Demo crats and Republicans alike, to work wholeheartedly for, and vote for, the Democratic ticket. Its election is something the community deserves. In closing this lengthy statement, I would like to express my personal-deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the count less friends the paper has made. Whatever The New Castle News according to Mrs. Gratz. A sec- has achieved has been done through the cooperation of the good end group will meet at the samo people in this town. Many civic-minded persons have contributed hour and place on Tuesday. Sixth to the editorial and news columns of the paper. I would like especially to thank the many loyal friends who stood by me and this newspaper during the time when both were under such bitter, scurrilous and malicious attack grade level, whether or not. sh3 has previous Scout experience. Fourth grade Brownies will meet Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 3, 4 and 5 at 3:15 in the Scout House. Girls inter ested and not yet signed up may choose either the Wednesday or Thurs\day meeting. There is still room in the Mon day group of the fifth grade troop, which will meet at the Scout House at 3:15 October 1, grade Scouts will meet at the Lutheran church at 3:15 Tues day, October 2. Mrs. Hensleigh Wedgwood and Of all the dozens of people who have contributed one way or another to the paper, none has deserved nor gets such deep will give a par ty f 0 r their former appreciation from me as our editor, Louis A. Brennan. He has group, at 3:15 Monday, October worked so tirelessly, written so brilliantly and made his per- i m the home of this year's sonal influence felt so widely that I believe the entire commu- seventh grade leader, Mrs. E'u- nity agrees with me in the recognition of his splendid work, gene Browning, Pond Hill Road. No one enjoys more respect and popularity in the community. Eighth grade Scouts will meet Of all the achievements of the paper, none brings greater satis faction to me than that this newspaper brought Lou Brennan to New Castle. Perhaps I may be permitted to say that the high esteem in which The News has been held by the hundreds who have visited its office has been due to the charm, kindliness and co operation of Peggy Gleason, who for five years has worked tire lessly for The News, with the only compensation the satisfac tion gained from what she could contribute to the welfare of the community I feel the New Castle News is a job well done in the Scout House at 7:30 Tues day evening and Mrs. Orrin Mc- Corison will lead the senior Scouts, who include members from ninth through twelfth grades, in a meeting in the Scout j House at 7:30 Monday evening, October 1. It can. be made a job ranging in difficulty up to the impossible if- such persons are stuffy, offi cious, stupid, hostile, guilty of deeds it would be better for a reporter not to know, arrogant and unwilling to submit their : actionsto public scrutiny, or prone to misinformation and guile. «As a'practicing reporter in* New Castle for the past year and a half, 1 am happy to attest that there is not in public, semi-public, quasi-public or organizational life here a person culpable in any of the above-listed faults. I was never lied to, nor deliberately misdirected, was never treated discourteously, was never mafa to feel that something was \none of my business\ was never intimidated, was never disparaged. Where a public official had some reason to believe from material appearing in the paper that he was under criticism, there was never any unpleasantness as a result; the criticism was taken in good part, as a vicissitude of holding office, and I was able to meet any such official on as friendly terms thereafter as though nothing had ever been said. It is quite true that editorially I avoided personal attacks, and never made one on a New Castle person, but this should not obscure the fact that there was no one who came into my ken who deserved one. w It will obviously be impossible to pay my respects to all persons in New Castle to whom I owe gratitude for the kind of helpfulness and the favors that a newspaperman values most; indeed the best way to do that would be to reprint Johnny De- Salvo's Red Letter Directory. But there are many who may not go unmentioned, under pain of a forever restless conscience on my part. Principal among those to whom I must say \thanks\ are Supervisor Robert Stewart, head of the Town government, and Douglas Grafflin, administrative head of the school system. These men have been alike in their candor, their patience a££ their friendliness. They have trusted me, as I trusted them, and (Continued on Page 11) America's First Defense Bond Drive is scheduled to run front If it has I September 3 through October £7 been of truly constructive service to the community, it has been an d S ives a11 of us the opportu- well worth it.
