Bus Passing (Continued from Page One) bined with at least five other summonses to be issued on bus- passing charges, compose a heavy docket for the September 30 session of Judge Sweet's court for this kind of offense. Along with two other recent cases, the list of school bus passers has reached ten as of this date. This total appears to be the result of intensive work by state highway patrolmen and school bus riders in a long-standing flagrancy of violation of bus- passing law, about which many complaints have been received in the school district, especially from the Millwood area. At a meeting of the West End Tax payers Association Monday, Sep tember 17, the condition was brought to the attention of Board of Education president Eugene V. Gedney, and at the meeting of the Board Tuesday, September 18, it was decided that the Board would give active support to a campaign to stamp out the bus- passing practice. The Board will seek to have vigorously prosecu ted all offenders against school bus safety. Harvey and Marty Huberth, Re publican candidates for council- men, have shown an active in terest and participation in local affairs. They will endeavor to serve the whole town, Republi cans and Democrats, non-com muters and commuters, whether in Mount Kisco, Chappaqua, Millwood or the West End, to the best of their ability.\ Bernson (Continued from Page One) our school children must cross our highways in order to get on the busses.\ For the careless driver, a $5 fine is no more of a deterrent than a slap on the wrist, accord ing to Mr. Bernson. \He pays the fine and forgets his crime. Par ents of New Castle school chil dren, however, do not regard so lightly the danger in which their children are placed,\ Mr. Bern- son said. The Democratic candidate for Justice of the Peace, declared that \the maximum penalties allowable under the law should be meted out to the passers of stopped school busses.\ \Some communities have gain ed notoriety for themselves as 'speed traps' where unwary mo torists are caught and fined for the slightest infraction of the law,\ according to Mr. Bernson. \That is not the kind of reputa tion which our community craves. It would be a salutory step, however, if New Castle were to become known as a place where the court is tough on peo ple who jeopardize the lives of our children by simple careless ness or indifference.\ In conclusion, the Democratic candidate promised Lhat \if chosen to be Justice of the Peace j in New Castle, it will ot my pur- 1 pose to emphasize human values and to safeguard those who de pend on strict justice for their e.ementary protection.\ PTA Meeting (Continued Trom Page One> customary September reports on the opening days of the school year. Along with the problems of pupil facilities faced by the school Board, Mr. Grafflin also brought to the attention of PTA members *he increasing^gravity of the unlawful passing%f school busses w^ich has been prevalent in .New Castle for several years. He asked not only for care on the part of persons present in observing school bus safety, but also that they participate ac tively in the enforcement of it by reporting violators and as sisting in their prosecution. With the safety of over a thousand children daily dependent on strict observance of laws govern ing the passing of stopped school busses, violations are not toler able matters. Mr. Miles, principal of Horace Greeley High School, reported on the attainments last year of the Parent Council meetings, and announced the first meeting of the year (held last night, Sep tember 27, in the school cafe teria) for the parents of all sen iors to discuss the new 12th grade social studies program. Miss Sliker, principal of Roar ing Brook school, explained to the parent audience that, since there is no substitute for affec tion and understanding in a child's life, and since the indoc trination in the- beliefs a child will live by must v begin early and be constant, these are the ap proaches\ stressed by the Roar ing Brook teaching staff.
