12 • NEW CASTLE NEWS, FRIDAY, JULY 27, 1951 Hunting and Fishing ' By* C. J. Daum « The advent of our first really hot summer weather has mate rially changed fishing conditions for bass in this area. Due to much higher temperatures of surface water, our game fish are, for the most part, in much deeper water during daylight hours, especially during periods of strong sun-j light. This condition, of course, requires entirely different meth ods lo produce fish consistently. ii you are fishing during the heat of the day, look for a shad ed shoreline with deep water close in, or better yet, in the area of a cold spring or brook Fish in these areas will be much more inclined to feed than under less comfortable conditions. Try casting your bait or lure close to or even under overhanging trees and slowly draw it out into deeper water. This accomplishes several things. First, any fish in a hungry mood is most apt to search close in toward .shore, which he knows is the hiding place for smaller fish and a great variety of insects, both surface and under-water types. Second, by slowly working your bait out into deeper water you will move it through various layers of wa ter that vary in temperature. One of these will very probably contain fish that will be inter ested in your bait. Shore fisher men must of course reverse this procedure by casting out and gradually working their bait in. The best times to fish at this season are, of course, early in the morning and again late in the afternoon continuing through the evening. Our most successful bass fishermen often go out at dark and fish a great variety of surface lures and, on occasion, underwater plugs and lures. Conditions vary from one day to the next so that you must often change lures several times until you get action. A plug that really gets them tonight might produce- very poorly tomorrow while good action can be had with some other lure. There has been considerable comment of late about fishing during thunderstorms. It has been our experience that fish, and especially bass, bite very well just before a storm ,but very seldom during or immediately after it. Our suggestion would be to get off the water in time to prevent a possible swamping during almost gale winds that accompany some of our local showers. Shore fishermen should also stay away from trees and if possible get into shelter as the fish won't bite anyway and you could be injured by falling trees or branches—to say nothing of the possibility of a lightning strike on or near you. Let's play it safe and catch just as many fish. Warburton i Continued from Page One> Nevertheless,* the Executive Committee of the Republican Club does endorse them as can didates and it intends to throw all of its moral support to them. Endorsing good candidates is in line with the publicly stated pol icy of the Club to work for in creasingly good and efficient government in the Town of New Castle. T n the recent past, the Club has endorsed such out standing men as the late Ray Aylesworth for County Judge and Francis~K. Decker for Town Councilman. \In the 5th District a group of Republican residents are ex ercising their rights in the Re publican direct primary in an effort to get the best possible candidates to represent them on the Town Committee. These re sidents are supporting Clara Eates and Albert Greminger against the hand-picked ma chine candidates Marjorie Ger- lach and Donald Earl. \All four candidates are good neighbors and good Republicans. There can be no question of any of them ever having been con nected with any 'isms' other than Republicanism. Personalities and smear attacks should have no part in this campaign. The issue the voters should bear in mind is whether the record of the pre sent incumbents, Elmer Fingar and Mary Krone, in representing the 5th District warrants enough faith in them to vote for thei\ hand picked candidates or whether the residents feel that J * Is time for a change and have faith in the civic records of the candidates endorsed by the G.O.P. Club.\ Love or Money (Continued from Page One) Miss Murphy and there's moon- glow in them. The play itself can only be described as' typical F.' Hu°h Herbert. A successful, sophisti cated actor, a few steps over the threshold of middle years, has just been widowed. Fe is alone, but well alone, when into his Lon.i Island home a pretty young girl stumbles out of—you guessed it—a storm. He is charmed. She is interest ed. He urges her to stay on as his secretary, a fact which Wi 'i^ chell, as well as the rest of the world, naturally misunderstands. Since the actor, Preston Mitchell has also a leading lady who has also been close to him on other occasions, and since he has also a young godson, who begins to find the secretary, Janet Blake, just about as charming as he can stand, there are complica tions. There are also clevQ, mirthful lines, deft acting and a fine supporting cast. Go and see.
