6 9 NEW CASTLE NEWS, FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1951 Board To Decide On Joining County Central Library It will be decided at next month's meeting of the Chap- paqua Library Board on Monday, April 9, whether the local Library will join the proposed Westches ter County Library Plan, accord ing to J. Callender Heminway, president of the Board, at the regular session, Monday, March 12. In preparation for taking this important decision, which must be rendered by April 15, copies of the extensive proposal were dis tributed to members of the Li brary Board Monday for exhaus tive study in the Interim. The County Library Plan apparently offers especial advantages to small but intensively used libra ries, such as Chappaqua's, through financial and labor eco nomies by means of centralized buying, cataloguing, binding, etc. No surrender of local auto nomy is required. Under the Edu cation Law by which the plan can be legally activated, public libra ries serving at least 80% of the population residing in communi ties of more than 2,500 population must approve the Plan before its establishment in the county. Alfred Forsyth, chairman of the Rules and Grounds Commit tee of the Library Board, report ing on inadequate drainage on Senter Street which frequently caused during the winter the ac cumulation of large pools of standing water in front of the Library, was empowered toy the Board to bring the matter to the attention of Town authorities and to request Town assistance .n ios relief. The shipping of the long de layed Silvary fixtures for the lighting improvement of the gen eral reading room was reported by Mr. Heminway, with the as surance by Bard Electrical Com pany, holders of the lighting pro- jact contract, that they would be- in wor^c as soon as the fixtures are received. The general reading room will be painted at the same time. Salaries of the librarian, Mrs. Margaret Handley, and the as sistant norarian, IVJJTS . Irene iiope, were increased according to the same formula used to adjust teachers' salaries in the school district recently, 'xhe librarian salary scale has been made con comitant with the teachers' oLXies in the district as a matter of policy. Mrs. Handley reported a con tinuing increase in all circulation categories during the month of February and a progressive rise in the numoer of library patrons.
