The plea that it needs defense puts it in a suspicious light it does not deserve. Its principal feature is an acknowledgement that prices have gone up and they must be paid.. This, acknowledgement re flects . itself in a pay rise for most .Town employees, and in creased prices for . contractual services, and purchased goods. Despite this,, and with a decrease in state allotment of tax funds that -nets the -Town about one- .third -of its former, receipts, the amburit to be spread in taxes Will bring about increases of from 47 cents to $1.50, a modest rise. In dollar terms the net increase is about $13,000: the total increase to be spread about $35,000. , j_ Aside from, the increase, the ^ j-rieW- -budget\ presents some feat- -I „ ... - ,ures worth mentioning: a ,$1000 i . In almost all cases re quests for pay rises were pared, and in no case were they raised where not specifically requested, so that some Town employees will \go without salary increases. In the new equipment category the highway department was turned down on its request for a new tandem roller with trailer,; and on a-power saw (for remov al of dead trees). As reported above - the request for. $5000 for\ j development of the Millwood rec-' • reation area was cut to $2000, and 'was takentfrom the jurisdiction.
