NEW CASTLE NEWS, THUASDAY. OCTOBER 10, 1946 • 5 its cracking upi There you were . . . nicely balanced on the fence ... all set to watch the world go by. The war was over. Rationing was out. Jobs were around for the asking. Everyone was in the chips. What the heck. Time out for a rest. That was last year. Then things began to pop. Production lagged, shortages continued. Black markets flourished. Price ceilings buckled, then collapsed. The OPA is dead—hooray! The OPA is back—hooray! But prices continue going up—the value of the dollar down. Dread inflation was here. Would it be boom-and-bust again? Merchandise manufacturers, cattle raisers and food processors took one big look, saw their big chance to make a killing before the \bust\ arri ved. So they did some sitting of their own—of a different kind. They sat on mountains of mer chandise- and foodstuffs, waiting for prices to go still higher. And the nation suffered artificial famines—in the midst of plenty! As if all this weren't enough for a nerve-shot, peace-hungry people—in marched the phoney war scares from nowhere. Suddenly, overnight, an ally became an enemy. Newspaper headlines screamed. Radio commentators thundered. Get tough! Halt aggression! What baloney! a # * Independent Voter: The mess we're in was not necessarily in the cards. It could have been averted. It came because too many of us independent voters sat idly toy while Congress either killed or crippled legislation aimed at smoothing the trans ition from war to peace. Remember? Bills to put real teeth into price con trol and prevent runaway inflation ... to build houses for veterans and the rest of us ... to halt profiteering ... to extend social security and establish health insurance benefits ... to stop lynching in the South ... to \ut an end, nation ally, to racial, religious, and color discrimination in employment. Yes, and the two incumbent Congressmen from Westchester—Representatives Gwinn and Gamble —helped get us into this mess. Their voting re cords are as bad as they come They cast their votes on the wrong side of issues with astounding regularity! It's high time we turned them out! It's high time independents asserted themselves! It's high time for new, progressive blood in Congress. And it can be done, on Election Day, if every in dependent, forward-looking citizen in Westches ter—regardless of party affiliation—makes up his mind that it must be done! ir tr ir The first step is to register.
