Telephone Pleasantville 991 Movie Gossip From Hollywood by SIDNEY SKOLSKY Pleasantville P T A Host To Parents When I walked on the set of \The Jolson Story\ there was Al Jolson watching Larry Parks, who is playing Al Jolson, do a scene for Director Al Green. But I was looking around for the dark spot — Sidney Skolsky, the producer. \Where is he?\ I asked Director Green. \He's there in that far cor ner,\ replied Director Green. I walked over to him and said, \What's the matter, Skolsky, did you do something bad that they make you stand in the corner?\ He tried to smile, but it was forced. Then a man approached with some drawings and asked Skol sky, \Are these sketches okay for Evelyn Keyes' costume?\ Skol sky took a quick glance and said, \They're fine. Excellent.\ He in- tialed the drawings, and the man walked away. \What a producer you are!\ I shouted. \Don't you know better than to okay something immedi ately? Even if you like it you must find something wrong with it. David Selznick would. Any good producer would. You could get kicked out of the producers' union for doing what you did, if they had a union.\ Skolsky was now greatly dis turbed. He wanted to know why I was bothering him, what I had against him. \I'm only trying to help you,\ I said. \You're new in this producing business and I want to give you some advice. \The first thing you've got to do, Skolsky, is to get a personali ty—a trademark.'-fake some of the leading producers. There's Walter Wanger. He's got Joan Bennett. Are you married to an actress? No. There's Cecil B. DeMille. He wears puttees. Every one knows that. No, I can't im agine you in puttees. There's Darryl Zanuck. He smokes king- sized cigars and swing a polo mallet. He's got two trademarks. As for you, you've got nothing. Why, your pants even match your coat. Maybe you can be known as the producer who has nothing!\ Skolsky pointed to his face. He always needs a shave, even after he has shaved. \But you can't be known as \The Beard,\ I said. 'Monty Woolley beat you to that.' \It begins to look\ I conclud ed, \that as a producer, you're a movie boner.\ When I went on the set of \Blue Skies,\ where Fred Astaire was doing his last dance routine for the picture, and therefore the last dance that he will do, for he has stated that he is re tiring after this picture. Astaire was in great form and looked wonderful. \He's not quitting after this dance, is he?\ I whispered to Di rector Stuart Heisler. \Definitely answered Director Heisler. \He's been doing it for years and he's had enough.\ The music played and Astaire danced. Then Director Heisler shouted, \That's it. That's it.\ The music stopped. Astaire stop ped dancing and sat down on a chair. \Have you got all you need?\ he asked. Director Heisler said, \Yes.\ \Are you sure you got it from every angle?\ asked Astaire. It appeared that he didn't want to stop dancing. Di rector Heisler said he had every thing he wanted from every an gle. Astaire slowly unlaced his dancing shoes, put on a pair of bedroom slippers and walked slowly toward the door. Fred Astaire had just ended a great career. But somehow I don't be lieve him. I believe he'll dance again. Town Notes of the Week: This town is getting ready for Christ mas, and Hollywood Boulevard is again officially known as 'Santa Claus Lane.\ The lamp posts on every street have giant tin cones placed over them, which are brightly painted and have electric bulbs, to give the impression at night of being lighted Xmas trees . . . The dis trict along Wilshire Boulevard, known as \the miracle mile,\ is also gaily decorated for Christ mas. However, there are no offi cial decorations along the busi ness streets of Beverly Hills, for there is an ordinance prohibit ing this, and the Beverly mer chants have protested. They want a Santa Claus Lane .... Soon there will be a nightly show on Santa Claus Lane, and Santa Claus will drive along in a huge sleigh with a prominent actor or actress as his guest for the eve ning. Hollywood is a place where they present Santa Claus as a double feature, and even Santa can't draw the crowds without a celebrity. Hollywoodiana of the week: Mike Curtiz, while directing Cary Grant in a scene, demonstrated how to speak a certain line. Grant did, but Curtiz wasn't sat isfied. \I didn't say it that way,\ said director Curtiz. \I don't like the way you said it.\ Grant re plied, \That's because you're listening with an accent.\ .... But don't get me wrong. I love Hollywood. A survey reveals that the aver age cigarette end discarded by Americans is 1.75 inches long (the length of the average whole cigarette is 2.75 inches). As the result of a program sponsored by the Pleasantville P. T. A. to acquaint parents with school facilities, more than 500 persons attended classes Tues day night at the High School. In at least one class from every department a 15 minute session was conducted. The P. T. A. theme for the year is \Know Your School\ and last night's program was entitled \Know Your Departments.\ Men's Club Forum The Men's Club Forum, which was held at the Congregational Church Tuesday evening, Decem ber 4, discussed world affairs at an informal meeting. The topic, \Which Road to World Govern ment\ was presented by Mr. Douglas Grafflin. He cited past attempts of uniting many gov ernments into one, and reviewed the experience of the organiza tion of the Continental Congress in America. Mr. Joseph Shaberick, who substituted for the president, Mr. Hogarth Sweet, said a lively dis cussion took place with eighteen different men expressing eigh teen different opinions.
