It is surprising how modest an actor can be, and say with sincerity that he doesn't care for himself on the screen. Therefore, an unusual guy is Jack Carson, who said, \Being kinda corny off the screen as well as on, I still get a kick out of see ing myself in pictures. Maybe some day I'll change, but I doubt it.\ June Haver, who looks so pret ty and smiles in all pictures, re plied, \I have only this comment. I just wish I could keep from smiling so much.\ Van Johnson will tell you that when he watches himself on the screen he sinks lower and lower in the chair until he finds him self on the floor. \But I must admit,\ says Van, \that I get a big bang out of seeing myself on the screen. I wanted to be a movie actor and I love it.\ Alfred Hitchcock generally manages to play a bit in every picture he directs. When asked how he liked himself on the screen, Hitchcock answered, \it's the part of my picture that I en joy the most. Some day I would like to play a role for another lirector. I want to see if I can take direction.\ Hollwood is a fabulous place, and from the mass of informa tion supplied about it every day, there has come to be a number of legends. It is believed: That Peter Lawrod takes out every girl in pictures with the exception of Marjorie Main . . . Basil Rathbone could be a regu lar Sherlock Holmes if he wanted to stop being an actor ... All prominent men in history, whet her they write songs or invent telephones, look like Don Ameche . . . The public won't go to see pictures that are about some thing—they want entertainment . . . Lana Turner has a room in her house that is filled with nothing but sweaters ... A per son must be seen at Mocambo to amount to anything in this town . . . Greer Garson couldn't play a bad woman in a picture, any more than she could be bad in a picture . . . Gene Kelly would rather dance than eat . . . Wal lace Beery would rather eat than dance—and does. That Van Johnson is a typical movie fan and would rather watch Keenan Wynn in a picture than himself . . . Betty Grable doesn't listen to an orchestra unless Harry James gives her the okay ... A person must be seen at Romanoff's to amout to any thing in this town . . . The pub lic won't go to see any more mystery picture—they want en tertainment . . . Betty Hutton is tireless and never goes to bed, despite what Ted Briskin might tell you. That Bob Hope is a riot In his own house, and Mrs. Bob Hope sends him to Europe and on a tour of Army camps just so she can keep from laughing . . . Bing Crosby, when he wants an en- tertainin gevening, just sits down and plays Sinatra records . . . Frank Sinatra when he wants an entertaining evening, just sits down and plays Crosby records . . . Garbo never talked, smiled or laughed until a di rector showed her how . . . You must be seen at The Club to really amount to something in this town . . . Cecil B.
