chappaqua journal, Wednesday, July 2 & July 9,1986 11 Local girl wins grand prize in important writing contest Heather Hirschfeld, a 17-year-old recent graduate of Horace Gree ley High School, has won the grand prize in the 1986 Scholas tic/Smith Corona Short Story Writing contest. In addition to the honor of winning the award, which was won by Joyce Carol Oates and Bernard Malamud and other literary notables when they were youngsters, Ms. Hirschfeld received a $1,000 scholarship and a new Smith Corona portable electronic type writer. She will use the scholarship at Princeton in the fall. Ms. Hirschfeld's award-winning stories \Watermelons\ and CHIROPRACTIC FOR BETTER HEALTH DR. LAWRENCE STERN CHIROPRACTOR- WRIST AND HAND PROBLEMS If you feel a weaKness, numbness, or pain in your hand and wrist, the problem may be carpal tunnel syndrome. This is caused bypressure on a nerve as it goes through a tunnel in the wrist. The tunnel is made up of several small bones and ligaments that form a groove. The nerve that passes through the groove is vulnerable to injury, especially when the wrist is bent back forcefully. This can happen when you fall with your hands outstretched to brace yourself—or when you hit a swinging door with the wrist bent backwards. Sometimes it results from the kind of physical exertion that's normal in your daily activities A carpenter, for example, can develop the syndrome from heavy hammering. So can a mechanic who pulls forcefully on a wrench. So can a housewife who scrubs the floor by leaning on one hand with the wrist bent backward. Whatever the cause, treatment is available to relieve the pres sure and return your wrist and hands to their normal condition —free of weakness and pain. In the interest of better health from the office of Dr. Lawrence Stern Chappaqua Chiropractic Office 238-6075 400 King Street \Cassidy\ grew out of assign ments from a creative writing class. The short story \Cassidy\ was inspired by an assignment to write a story based on conflict between two people. Ms. Hirsch feld's story relates an incident of betrayal between two young friends. Her second entry, \Watermelons about a young girl whose hobby turns into an obsession, also grew out of a class assignment. The panel of judges in the short story competition included such prominent writers as Joyce Mil ton, Robert Cormier and C.C. Loomis. The annual writing program, conducted by Scholastic Maga zines, Inc., since 1924 and spon sored by Smith Corona since 1984, is designed to encourage creative writing among young people. It is now the largest student awards program of its kind in the U.S. Tim United Why NEW YORK—A PROMISING NEW LITERARY CAREER IS LAUNCHED....A 17-year-old high school student joined the talented ranks of Joyce Carol Oates and Bernard Malamud when she received the grand prize in the national 1986 Scholastic/Smith Corona Short Story Writing Awards.
