N U M B E R 1 By Red Green Saturday marked the end of O.C.C.’s first football season and it ended on a good note. The Onon daga Community College Braves defeated Arizona Junior College 35-8, surprisingly ending up their regular season with a perfect record of 12-0. The Braves who are now ranked No. 1 in the nation, among junior colleges, have accepted a bid to the Honolulu Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii on New Years Day. The Braves will face highly ranked Miami-Dade Junior College who also had a perfect season recording 12 wins against a tough schedule which included highly ranked Florida State. The Tor- nades led by hard running Terry Davis are looking forward to the game against The Braves. These two teams have never met in a regular season season contest. Head coach John Grant, formerly a player at Syracuse University, was quoted as saying: “We expect a tough game against the Braves and it should be a good one.” O.C.C. led by slick passing quar ter back Mike Vrissis easily han dled the Arizona eleven and never trailed in the game. The Braves got on the board first on the opening kickoff when tailback Kevin Cor bett returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for the first Brave tally. On the ensuing kickoff the Eagles failed to move and were forced to punt. On the next series of downs Brave quarterback Vrissis handed off to the running back Nick Pallotta who followed the blocking of an outstanding line for 70 yards and the second of many touch downs to come on the day for the Braves. This made the score 14-0 and from this point on both teams bogged down as defenses tightened up and the halftime score was 14 0. Play open in the second half with O.C.C. kicking off to Arizona and the Eagles return man fumbled the kickoff on the 20 and Braves lineman Mike Goss recovered the loose pigskin and rambled 20 yards for the score. Brave placekicker Vinny Spadafora kicked the extra point and the score was 21-0. O.C.C. kicked off and the Eagles running back John Cocine ran the ball back to the Braves 46. On the next play, Eagles quarterback Chuck Boyce hit tight end Larry Taylor for a 46 yd. bomb and the only touchdown of the day for the Eagles. Placekicker Tom Rafferety missed the extra point and the score was 21-6. The rest of the third period en ded up scoreless as the Braves defense, led by tackle Mike Goss and the rest of the fiercesome four some: A1 DeRosa, Pete Vassallo, and Jay Meltzer, stopped the Eagles. Brave head coach Rex Wallace said, \These men have played a big part in our winning season.\ The fiercesome foursome sacked the opposing quarterback ten times in the game. The fourth quarter was an ex citing one as O.C.C. continued to dominate the play. On the second play of the quarter fourth string halfback Ron Joseph ran the ball 95 yards off the right tackle to make the score 27-6. Spadafora added the extra point and the score was 28-6. On the next series of downs sub stitute quarterback Pat Arnold moved the Eiagles down to the Braves 21 when starting defensive back Joe Ferlo intercepted an ar nold ariel intended for tight end Garry Tworek. Ferlo grabbed the ball and raced 79 yards for the Braves final tally. Spadafora added the extra point and ended the Braves scoring for the day making the score 35-6. On the last series of downs of the game, defensive Captain, Rich Delutis caught Brave quarterback Mike Vrissis in the. end zone for a safety ending the game, making the final score 35-8. After the game Coach Wallace commended the entire Brave team for their efforts and said the team will really have to get up for the game, if they want to stay number one in the Nation. Wallace especially commended Mike Goss, Larry Smith, Vince Spadafora, Jay Meltzer and Kurt Herman for their outstanding performance on the turf. The team will leave for Hawaii on Thursday. Radio and TV chair man Cathy Stampalia said, \That the game will be covered live nationally on WOCC TV. Richard Cobb and Dan Houser will cover the game while Craig Baum will do the color coverage. Head of the Music Department James W. Mosher said, \A band will be brought along to play at half-time.” Wild Bill Harris will bring the Jazz Lab along and solo’s will be played by Sticks Deterick •and Buddy Basile on the drums. Anyone wishing to travel to the game must contact ticket manager Carl Eschelbach at the Onondaga Hill Stadium. The school bus will travel to the game and only 45 people may go. Tickets are going fast. Game time is 8:00 p.m. on New Years Day. See you there and let's hope the Braves will still be Num ber One.
