Inside the Rational Education Plan Orienta- Vojcei Is Finally Approved tion Student Poetry Corner ....page 2 SGA Events Calendar ...page 3 ECC Sports... ...page 4 The ECC Student Voice Albany - The New York State Legislature today passed Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY SUNY 2020 legislatioa Upon the signature o f the Governor this bill will, among many other valuable measures, enact a rational tuition plan for the State University o f New York The following statements were offered in support o f this critical reform: SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T Hayden said: \On behalf of the SUNY Board o f Trustees, I want to commend Governor Cuomo, to whom we owe an enormous debt o f gratitude for both his leadership and his persistence, and the New York State Legislature. They are fol lowing the lead o f SUNYs Student As sembly and Faculty Senate, which identified rational tuition as the best way to protect the interests o f both SUNY and our students. And we must acknowledge the constructive and creative roles played by Senator LaValle and Assembly- member Glick the Chairs o f the Higher Education Committees, and Nancy Zim- pher, our tenacious Chancellor. This bill represents a lifeline for SUNY and gives us a fighting chance to protect access to New York's great public university and to make it stronger. The SUNY Board of Trustees will move immediately to im plement the acadvocated for this policy!’ SUNY Chancellor Nancy L Zim- pher said: \Today Governor Andrew Cuomo and the legislature have agreed to historic reform o f SUNYs long-broken tuition policies. This is a tremendous vic tory that will not only allow the State University o f New York to flourish, but will finally enable students and their families to confidently plan for the cost of their education. \I fully appreciate that this new policy comes at a challenging time for students and families - but I want to assure every New Yorker that we at SUNY pledge to make good on their investment Every new tuition dol lar will be reinvested in creating the best possible educational experience for our students, including protecting and en hancing programs, allowing for smaller class sizes, and better preparing stu dents for greater post-graduate opportu nities. 'A rational tuition policy that is fair, responsible, and predictable has long been SUNYs primary legislative goal With this new policy in place, SUNY col leges and universities can provide a pre cise, year-by-year financial outlook for the duration o f a student's enrollment The policy also gives our campuses a steady and reliable stream of revenue to meet SUNYs academic mission and be come the driver o f New York's economic recovery. Most importantly, we will be able to do all o f this with a continued commitment to the access and afford ability that have become a trademark of a SUNY education. \Governor Cuomo has shown exemplary and historic leader ship on issues o f higher educatioa I want to commend Senate Majority Leader Skelos; Speaker Silver; our dedi cated higher education chairs, Senator Lavalle and Assemblymember Glick and the entire Western New York legislative delegatioa This is responsible public policy that will effectively stabilize the State University o f New York and benefit generations of New Yorkers. It took courage to stand up and support a ra tional tuition policy, and for that I ap plaud them \SUNYs 64 campus presidents have been tireless advocates for tuition reform, and the elected lead ership o f SUNYs faculty and student gov ernments - specifically Kenneth O'Brien, Julie Gondar, and KaidynBeachner - has led this effort from the beginning. I want to thank them again for their strong sup port \Today the collective efforts o f all those who worked so hard to bring this all-important policy to fruition have been rewarded with legislation that will make a real difference in the lives of SUNY students, their families, and citi zens throughout New York State.\ (Continued on page 3.)
