PREHISTORIC ART AT THE CHILDRENS MUSEUM A special exhibit entitled The Hand Of Man will be on display at the Childrens Museum Oct. 14 through November 18 1987. The ex hibit contains a number of sérigraphie panais which il lustrate examples of prehis toric art found on cave walls and rocks in Spain, France and the central part of the Sa hara Desert. The exhibition was researched and developed by Douglas Mazonowicz, Di rector of the Gallery of Pre historic Art in Astoria, NY. Mr. Mazonowicz. is the author of severalbooks on this type of art. In archaic societies, the creation of visual imagery was considered a magi cal/spiritual act brought into existence by a person who possessed great powers. For example, if a tribal artist painted a scene depicting a successful hunt on a cave wall, this scene became the focus of magical incantations. The tribal hunters could then go forth confident that a suc cessful hunt was assured. This exhibition was made possible by a grant provided by the New York Council for the Humanities.
