\ G I V E U S M O R E L I B R A R Y H O U R S by Robert A. Deo In late October of 1983 a com mittee was appointed by the Utica/ Rome Student Association. The name of the committee was the Library Survey Committee and the obj ect.ives of this committee were to conduct a survey of student ideas and feelings about the library here at SUNY College of Technology* compile the results of the survey, and prepare a rqport containing the results of the survey and the rec ommendations of this committee. During the administration of the survey many of the committee mem bers detected a note of skepticism by students about the utility of such an undertaking. Be that as it may, a final report has been completed and submitted to appro priate members of the college ad ministration. A summary of the observations and recommendations contained in the report follow. Observations: - Almost 2/3 (62%) of the students surveyed spend more than ten hours per week in the library. - Almost 2/3 (65%) of the students surveyed used the library most between 4:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. with the majority (40%) using it between 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. - Most of the students who responded (82%) thought that there was a relationship between the number of hours they spent in the library and the number of hours the library was open. . \ - Of the students surveyed, almost 2/3 (65%) felt that more than 20% of this time spent in the library was dependent upon research/ reference materials. - About 3/4 (75%) of the students surveyed stated that at one time or another they were not able to finish their work because the library was closing. - Over half (54%) of the students surveyed said that the library at their junior colleges had more operating hours than the SUNY Tech library. - About 95% of the students surveyed stated that they would/could make use of the extra hours If the library hours were extended. About 80% stated'that they would/ could.make use of the extra hours after a night course. - A majority of the students (80%) felt that the library hours shouldn't be extended only during mid-term and final exams, while 92% felt that the weekend hours of the library should be extended. - About 90% of thé students surveyed felt that the library was as effective or more so than other places to study. Almost 2/3 of those students thought the library was the most effective place to study. - Over 2/3 (69%) of the students surveyed make use of the night study at one time or another. More than 1/2 (59%) of the students stated that they would make use of the area if it were moved to another area of the building/campus. - Almost 4/5 (78%) of the students surveyed said: No, they weren't happy with the night study area as a substitute for extended library hours. Generally, the conditions in the present night study area were rated as below average. Fifty percent of the students who responded to this question’rated the ventilation in the night study as below average or poor. Fifty-nine percent rated the lighting as above average or average. Sixty-one percent of the students responding rated the space in the night study as being inade quate (below average or poor). Fifty-seven percent of the students who responded to this question rated the atmosphere in the night study as below average or poor. There was also space available on the survey for additional com ments by the students who wished to make them. Among the numerous comments made were: - Comments calling for an extension of the library hours either at night or on weekends, - Comments noting deficiencies in the present night study area, - Comments regarding the lack of working typewriters in the library. (Only one out of nine is in proper working order.) - Comments expressing concern about the noise level in the library. 1 Recommendations : After careful review of the responses and observations of this study, the Library Survey Committee made the following recommendations: - That the weekday operating hours of the library be extended (10:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.). - That the weekend operating hours of the library be extendéd (Saturday 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and Sunday 8:00 p.m.- 10:00 p.m.). - That the operating hours of the library be extended during mid-term and filial exam periods. - That the general conditions of the night study area be improved or the night study be moved to another area of the building/campus. - That the typewriters be repaired and properly maintained. - That there be stricter enforce ment of noise levels by library personnel. URSA's purpose is to fund and advise cultural, recreational, social, and athletic programs for the students at the College of Technology. This is accomplished by assessing a $45.00 per semester student activity fee to all full time students at the college. URSA also represents the student body in all college affairs. We have both voting and nonvoting seats on most campus-wide commit tees, which allows us to voice the students' opinions.' URSA consists of an executive committee (listed above), a Senate, and six boards, each responsible for a different aspect of student activities. The Senate consists of one representative for each 100 members of the junior and senior class and one representative from each board. We encourage you to get involved with URSA, the Senate, any of the six boards, or any club, and we look forward to working with you to enhance our lives at the College of Technology. - I E E E / E 2 T C by Rich Haynes During the past semester the IEEE/E2TC Club was very busy. One of the events sponsored by this Club was a Student Profession al Awareness Conference, which over 100 students attended. The Club also had two tours of local companies. One was of PAR Tech nology and the other was of the G.E. Semi-Conductor plhnt in Liverpool, N.Y. Also, IEEE/E2TC and the Nursing Club got together for a volleyball game and mixer; a good time was had by all. A fund raiser was also held at Spilka's .
