F L A G F O O T B A L L October 9 - 10, 1982 Saturday/Sunday The whistle sounds; all play stops; the referee shouts, “2 minutes, each side has three (3) time outs, play ball!” If you have ever partici pated either as a player or a spectator, you would understand the heart- throbbing call of the referee. Flag football’s most intense play-making occurs during the last two (2) minutes of each half. Each team attempts to create its last offensive drive, while each team’s opponent attempts to create a strong defense. The intensity of the season can be noted in the snowflake as one reads the daily activities and meetings. The most impressive memos indi cate the strong rivalries amongst Mean Machine, Hummer House, and the Wizards (a Humor House expansion team). These three (3) teams are sure to lock horns in the playoffs, with Hummer House possibly meeting the Wizards in a playoff battle to the top spot against Mean Machine. The weekend of October 9, 10, 1982, brought these teams to the present standings: No. 1 Mean Machine 4 win /0 loss /0 tie 108 p.s.* 25 p.g.u.** 2 Hummer House 3 /1 /0 47 25 3 The Wizards 2 /2 /0 58 44 4 Sunset Packers 1 /2 /0 36 74 5 Roskoff Raiders 0 /2 /1 13 34 6 Dirty White Boys 0 /3 /1 12 72 * points scored ** points given up All teams will earn playoff berths. The playoffs will operate as follows: No. 1 VS No. 6 No. 2 vs No. 5 No. 3 vs No. 4 Some updated notes on the teams: Mean Machine: changing quarterbacks, the MM now gives a double threat on the field as the lightening quick Jim Jessup QB’s. The MM’s weakness, they key too heavily on Jimmy’s speed and foul weather could be the team’s undoing. Hummer House; opening the season chaotically, they are now operating as a well oiled machine - not the same penalty producers that met Mean Machine in the early season. The Wizards; potentially explosive, their immaturity as a team caused their latest loss. They have good agility, speed, and ball handl ing. They need an attitude check. Sunset Packers; unspectacular, but persistent. The Packers are plagued with a changing roster and injuries. I still see them as the upset team. The potential is there, just untapped. Roskoff Raiders; basically, the same as last year’s RR’s. Their tie with the Dirty White Boys indicate their offensive game has quite a lot to be desired. Dirty White Boys; not the team of last year in any form. Major changes are needed to improve a last ditch effort both offensively and defensively. Well sports fans, that’s it. Until the next weekend of play. October 16/17, 1982. Look for Nanette’s Warriors vs. Amie’s Invaders on Saturday, October 16,1982’s report. October 16/17, 1982 Saturday/Sunday Weekend Update: - An interest ing weekend as the flag football teams jockeyed for position. If you could eliminate the freezing temperature, the high winds, the torrential downpour & the hail storm, then you and I might just call this another quiet weekend. If there ever was a weekend where the players should have protested and struck (like the NFL), this was the one. The worst weather unleashed its fury as soon as the 1:30 Saturday game got underway. The team braved the weather this weekend to end the season, hop ing for a win or an upset. The only game which caused any changes was the Sunset Packers (18) vs Roskoff Raiders (19). Roskoff Raiders vs. Wizards - 11:00: Saturday morning’s game started in 45° temperatures, a chilly wind, and occasional drizzle mixed with sunshine. A sure sign of the approaching winter. The Raiders, hoping for a win, played an explosive game against the Wizards. The Raiders and the Wizards are quick action teams, with multiple attack talent. The two teams battled as if the con frontations were a preliminary for a Super Bowl game. The quick explosiveness of both teams became quite apparent as both teams scored quickly and back to back in the final two minutes of the game. The outcome put the Raiders on the short end of the score board as the Wizards won 20-25. Hummer House vs. Sunset Packers - 1:30: A season first, as HH and SP squared off under extreme weather conditions. Where as the Wizards win was under quietly cool weather, the Packers showed their untapped talent as they stepped onto the field. The weather took a turn for the worse, as temperatures dropped below freezing. This change was followed by a down pour which changed to hail. The large following of spectators ran for their cars for shelter and heat as the Packers attempted to shut down Hummer House. The Packers surprised the Blue and S T A N D I N G S The final standings are : No. 1 Mean'Machine 5-0 2 Hummer House 4-1 3 Wizards 3-2 4 Roskoff Raiders 1-3-1 5 Sunset Packers 1-4 6 Dirty White Boys 0-5 The top three (3) teams have remained seated since the second week of play. The Packers have dropped from 2nd place the first weekend to fifth place in the final regular season play. Roskoff Raiders were able to put a win under their belt as they upset the Packers 19-18. This also pushed Gold, as their offense swept from the 20 yard -line. The Hummer House defense broke the play, but with the extreme weather and temp, the Packers QB broke for touchdowns twice on 2 consec utive sweeps. Roscoff Raiders vs. Sunset Packers: The 11 a.m. showdown between these two teams left the Packers with an empty cup, as the Raiders enjoyed a one-point victory and a move upward in the playoff standings. The Raiders put on an equally strong show as the Packers in the first half as each team scored. The half ended 6-7 in the Raiders favor. The second half exploded as each team scrambled for 2 touchdowns each. The Packers nemesis is the lack of the extra point. Mean Machine vs. Dirty White Boys: This 12:15 p.m. encounter between the No. 1 and No. 6 team is only a prelude to the playoffs. MM ran over the DWB as if they were frozen in the ground. I won’t mention the score, rather I will futuristically suggest that the playoffs will bring to Mean Machine the likes of the Wizards or Hummer House. This does not count out the possibility that the Raiders and/or the Packers could be underdog upset winners. them into the No. 4 position and slipped the Packers into the No. 5 slot. The Dirty White Boys, attempting to show signs of life, never saw the light as they have remained in the cellar since the season opener. The playoffs will pit the No. 1 ranked Mean Machine vs. No. 6 Dirty White Boys. If the DWB espouses the same game play as in Sunday’s October 16 game, the No. 1 MM’s can have a field day scoring while acclimating to the damper, colder weather. This game will be in conjunction with No. 2 Hummer House vs. No. 5 Sunset Packers. The Packers, with multiple talent, have yet to put together a consistant and respect able offense and defense. The No. 2 HH showed quick speed and pursuit defensively as line changes and direction varied against the Packers. The HH team has only allowed one extra point during the season and that came early in the season in an 18-19 thriller loss to Mean Machine. The play off game to watch will be the No. 3 Wizards vs. No. 4 Roskoff Raiders. Both teams have quick speed and multiple talent. It should be an explosively high scoring game. a n n urn nnn a EEC an an osa tfirinn s a n v n m ( i n t i FT lR B O rl B E E B E E C H H H n d a n BGEran a n a 'f 'A -'3 L L S £ £ P £ % iff ssT V A r T £ £ 0 A note of interest to Mean Machine; as a cohort in the athletic competition this season and seasons past, one thought protrudes beyond all others: That is, “As a sportsman it has been a pure pleasure to have been pursued such a formidable opponent. With fhe core of gentle men that have held the Mean Machine together, it has indeed been a strick pleasure. Also, as a parting thought, if you had not returned as a team, Jim Jessup “Mr. Greased Lightening” was contracting a spring ‘82 agreement with Hummer House. Thanks for helping make this season an exciting one!” 2
