Through the reduction in inhibition property of the drug we are forever using it as a method in socializing. In fact, the same in hibition reducers are so wide spread throughout our society that you can hardly stop at a friend’s house without being offered a drink. That is, of course, if they have any left from the night before. With all of the Wonders modem inorganic chemistry have brought us, no inorganic harmful drug has gained the social accep tability or addiction rates as a drink. People get addicted, which is not always the fault of society. They become hooked because their bio chemical reactions form immediate withdrawal, in the form of a hangover. This varies iri degrees depending upon the person, amount of consumption, and body chemistry. Alcohol, however, by nature is addictive. The effect of alcohol, if one does not die from alcohol poison ing, may oe delirium tremens and blackouts. While people are black ed out and don’t know what their bodies are doing they have caused trouble. Now these people are helping to fill our jails and many other institutions, such as mental institutions. Hospitals pick up many problem drinkers whose bodies show the signs of over in dulgence. If alcohol is such a problem, then why hasn’t it been made il legal, as many other drugs have been? Well, it has been! I n 1920, C o n gress p a s s e d a la w caUed 77te Volstead A ct. The law had been in effect for 13 years, then was repealed because it could not be enforced. Which demands a little discussion in itself. From 1920 to 1933 people revolted. It became economical to transport marijuana, resulting in the first heyday of pot. Coffee consumption practically doubled. The move in use of hard liquor rather than softer wines or beer became more popular! again because of the economical factors. The hard stuff was smaller and easier to conceal and transport. This compares to the move from marijuana to the chemicals of to day. For our profiteering sub cultures moving smack is much more profitable than weed. Instead of controlling, prohibition caused more abuse. So that the hospitals, jails, and other institutions were filled, as they are today, with decaying minds and bodies of alcholics. The living nightmare called the D .T .’s (delirium tremens) is an experience that, in the 20’s as well as now, no alcoholic relishes. The move in New York State toward prohibition is evident in two laws: The stricter law imposed on drivers that are caught under the influence, that has already been lassed. And the law raising the legal age to 19, now pending. They are, unfortunately, likely to have little control over the miserable crutch. The laws may even increas consumption. As has been shown to us by prohibition. No surefire remedy is available for controlling alcohol. Yet one’s own personal knowledge of his body’s reaction to it should follow suit with the way the individual handles it. In society, people who wish not to drink should not be treated like they have a social disease. Maybe they know some thing that the guzzlers don’t.
