March 1978 Paper Sun PAGE 9 Dan Maxwell For Vice-President URSA Dan Maxwell -lam a candidate for the office of Vice President of Utica Rome Student Association Government. I am a second semester Junior currently enrolled in the Criminal Justice program with an emphasis on Corrections. - I achieved Dean's List status last sem ester and hope to maintain my academic success while being involved in the strengthening of Upper Division College. I am chairman of the Greivance Committee of the Pub Life Board and am accustomed to dealing with the students and their concerns of the college. I feel that I have attained a good personality for dealing diplomatically with stu dents arid administration. I will be able to use my qualities to the fullest by holding such a position as Vice President. Also, I am Vice President of the college Ski Club and am a member of various instramural athletic teams. My main concern as the Vice President would be to give the government back to the students. At the present time I feel the Student Association has drifted too far away from the students at Upper Division College. In order to funtion appropirately, the student government needs to be run with a total emphasis on democracy. Therefore as Vice President, I will work towards building a student voice in URSAG. Another extremely important conern of mine is openings and maintaining working communica tion channels betwee the student body, the student government, and the administration. If we can move toward these goals we will succeed in attaining a progressive and productive student govern- msmt. - Being an present senator in URSAG, I feel that the senate performs in an integral way concerning the workings of the student government. To encour age student ^participation in the senate,—1_ -am to review the designated powers a senator can employ and hope to establish means by which he or she can have an even greater feeling of usefulness to the student body. Our government cannot be under- estimated Un its values to the student’s personal, academic, social and political lives. I stress a strengthening of the senate because there are changes for students to voice many different opinions and in this way, more students will have the desire to get acquainted with and involved in our student government. This year has been one of decreased student interest in the government. The government is our way to meet and deal with the administration enabling us to help ourselves in • the provision of a beter atmosphere here at SUNY Tech. I hope next year will bring a higher level of involvement and with your help I would very much like to be able to achieve these goals in the office of the Vice Presidency. I thank you and encourage your participation in the upcoming election. Gary Cuda (Photo by Ken Simons) Cary Cada For President URSA There are several areas of student interest that I am concerned with more so than others. The student’s aren’t getting a fair shake, when it comes to student representation. There is not as positive a response in this area as thpre should be. The areas of student interest that I am concerned with are: 1. Security and Parking 2. Mandatory Health Insurance Fee 3. Veterans - 4. Student Rights 5. Student Involvement I. The U/D parking situation is the biggest problem on campus. I don’t appreciate getting a ticket for parking and I am sure you don’t appreciate a $3.00 or a $5.00 ticket either. I am currently on record with a proposal to amend the overnight parking situation for those U/D students who visit our local pub and find themselves slightly incapacitated and unable to drive home. Let us encourage DWI by giving tickets to those students who know enough not to drink, then drive. I am also alarmed by the dollar value of thefts on this campus. Somehow, someway, this has got to be curbed. Also, the students are not really aware of the campus police powers. I feel that the students have a right to know where they stand. II. And speaking of standing, I support the Health Center but I stand against a mandatory health insurance fee. I believe there should be a voluntary service offered, but not a mandatory fee. If I have no direct influence in changing this mandatory insur ance fee (which may be the case) then I will attempt to change this by student support. III. Since student support is important, I am including the forgotten student, the Vet. I have the practical insight to see and understand problems that the returning Veterans may have incurred between real life and college lifeTI can identify with any problem a vet has, because I am also a vet, a disabled vet at that. I have been through the hassles and the hell, the good times and the bad times, and I’ve made it. I am dedicated to assisting the_velerans in their transition from military to civilian education. I would also like to unite the Vets into a strong, unified body. These are my goals concerning Vets. John Sportelli, the Vet Representative and I have been and will continue to work closely together for the Veterans. ÏV. Student Rights are im portant in a college environment. If it weren’t for the students there wouldn’t be a college, nor an establishment designed to meet the needs of the student. On Feb. 1st, 1978, URSAG elected me as Senior Senator. As a concerned student, I have been active in representing student rights and I am an advocate of student government. By the students, not the establishment. I have found several shortcomings dealing with the U/D government and U/D students. These short comings are with: 1. Student Government 2. Student Input' 3. Student Center 4. Clubs and Organizations A. The student government is more for the establishment than it is for the students. The govern ment has lost touch with the students. I want to put the student government back where it be longs. B. The student input is low and I feel this has been caused by the/ lack of student government response to the needs of the student— this will change!!! C. I have put a proposal into the CAMPUS LIFE COMMITTEE with URSA sponsorship concern ing the student center. The gaudy mill-type atmosphere has got to change. The student center should be for the students, and my goal is to change it. This is what is proposed: That every club and organiza tion recognized by URSA be allowed to display at least one painting, plaque, or banner etc. to assit in prompting student aware ness of these URSA recognized bodies. Also I have observed some of these clubs and organizations are very splintered, and I see a need for coalition of these grups in order to sponsor events and activities. I will help these groups co-ordinate with each other in order to work together as a viable unit sponsoring events and activi ties to better the U/D community. All in all, this can only enhance our campus and breathe new life into stagnated social atmosphere which seems to be prevelant among the students.
