PAGE 4 March 1978 Stop The Presses!!! Editorial The typewriter in the Publications office has been out all week. EEEKML.the very week we have a deadline! Dead lines, that’s what I feel this editorial is going to be filled with. Anyway... The first 12 page issue of my career! Actually it’s yours too. We’ve had a bit of interest surrounding some articles that were submitted by students and myself in the last issue. Good, let’s stimulate some minds and get some well thought out opinions from you people out there on topics that interest you. _ Policy The following is a policy that was drawn up last year to control blatantly poor articles that were printed and had contained colorful words directed at members of the college community. “The student pressshall not print any material that contains slander, libel or personal attack in reference to any other member of the college community.” Some people have felt as though the above policy has been violated in certain respects, I don’t. But anyway the Publication Board is going to review or revamp it so there won’t be any problem in the future. Perhaps many of you have no idea of what I am talking about, thats OK. If you should ever have any questions, comments or opinions „ please write a letter to-the editor and see your name in print! Elections and the Forum The forum on thè 16th of this month will be interesting only if you people show up. Put these candidates in the line with questions on any Lopic that you feel is important, find out what they know and whether they are willing to admit that they don’t know everything (that’s important too). Anyway, make your presence felt and let them know that they are dealing with an intelligent student body. Spring... ...is just around the corner. This is the last paper before the spring break that We call could use so desperately (at least I can). Well, have a pleasant time where ever you spend it. Oh yes, I’ll be spending it myself at my sisters in Florida. She has this fittle place right on the beach and... Answer To the Editor: In regard to the article, “The Truth about the Middle East”, Shalom is in the process of corrolating facts, rumors, stories, falsehoods, and other items relevant to the topic. Watch for the next issue of the Paper Sun. Student Rights Dear Editor: ^ Recently a valiant battle was waged by Alpha Phi Delta for students rights. But unfortunately we and the students of Upper Division have lost. This battle was fought on the 21st and 22nd of February. On the 21st of last month the opening shots could be heard in a stormy ursag meeting senator Gary Cuda, an APD Brother, lead the charge. A hopeless battle was fought against the neanderthal thinking of one William J. Murabito who is vice president if Academic Affairs. APD proposed to set up a free keg of beer for students on Friday the 24th at noon. Mr. Murabito was dead set against it. He felt that it would interfere with students attending classes. Paper Sun tflE, ScLitoX Rebuttal All of us who follow national and world affairs and consider ourselves well informed, are well aware of two very important issues of the day - The Middle East and the literacy of the American student. Recently these two issues came together in a very sad article that appeared in the last issue of The Paper Sun under the title of the “Truth” About the Middle East. Admittedly, the author of the article states that he is quoting or paraphrasing an article by a U.S. Senator (AGourezk of South Dakota) that he read in a third rate sex magazine, Penthouse...Now, sex, magazines are okay with me and admittedly I will occassionally read one myself. Even the President of the United States and his ambassador to the United Nations will write for one. In fact, I feel I'm in good company when we pick magazines to read, or write for, that are noted for their truthfulness and literacy. I am grateful that my own college education taught me to tell the difference between both good and bad writing, and between the truth and propoganda. Literacy doesn’t mean only the ability to read write, but also involves the ability to think for oneself and not take the written word of anyone, including a U.S. Senator, for granted. We have gone that way once before when our country fell for the “truth of Joe McCarthy in the ’50’s. And we all know the panic and tragedy that sad episode created! Germany, a once proud exampe of a “literate” nation fell under the same spell of “truth” when it followed the writings of the author of Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler. Knowing how to read is not good enough. Knowing how to tell the difference between truth and propaganda in what we read is by far the mark of a literate person. It is easy for a person capable of reading to be taken by the written word. It is by far much more difficult to go beyond the written word and think for oneself - questioning authorship, authenticity and sources of a writer's information. When one is capable of doing this, one is truly a literate and free person who can tell the difference between propaganda and truth. Such a person will not be easily pushed into believing everything that is written, even if its the New York Times or a college text - to say nothing of the writings of a U.S. Senator who has to get his biased views printed in questionable “fun” magazines. It is with pride that our college has taken the step toward helping our students become more literate in terms of not only learning how to read and write understandably - but also learn to understand and question what they read. Recently courses (both credit and non-credit) in Report Writing, Creative Writing and even just plain Writing have been offered and the student response has been good. Now the college is plannign to set-up a program that will not only expand on these basic skills, but will also help students - and faculty - learn how to reason logically so that we can all learn how to tell when we are told the truth and when we are being “had” by an “authoratative” source. When one learns how to make this kind of distinction, one is truly an educated person who can read or listen to anything and make up their own minds as to what is the “TRUTH\. Leonard Shotland Professor of Human Services Senator Cuda retorted by stating that the average age of U/D students is twenty six. How is one or two glasses of b,eer going to make someone drunk? U/D students are old enough to watch out for themselves. Besides there is a precedent from last years organizations having free kegs. (Pub Manager) had already oked the keg. Also we had the full support of all URSA Senators. But Mr. Murabito appears to prefer a dictatorship to democracy. His word was final on the- matter so the keg was killed. Bu;t of course this didn’t stop APD. We immediately made an appointment to meet with U/D President Dr. Kunsela. This meeting took place on the 22nd and this observer was in attendance. The meeting didn't go well. The day before Mr. Murabito also had a meeting with Dr. Kunsela. It was obvious Murabito would be backed up right or wrong! Dr. Junsela pointed out that there was a college law written stating that no alcohol could be served in the Pub before four in the afternoon. Friends of APD later searched through URSAG and college records and could find no law! APD could have had the keg set up on any night but we voted against it. A principle was at stake. How can one man go against the will of the vast majority of U/D students? WE can only hope that student pressure will be applied. Possibly an administrator who has the needs of U/D students in mind is needed. Alpha Phi Delta gives special thanks to friends of APD. Point of View By Larry N. Iannucci I would like to dedicate this article to peace in the Middle East. Whatever side one is on thats the ultimate goal. In the last issue of the Papersun I wrote an article pertaining to the Middle East in which I con^emmed Israel. Obviously this article brought sharp criticism from certain quarters. Thats good. If it didn’t, then I would have failed in my mission. My goal was to stimulate thought on both sides of a problem with world implications. The final analysis is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I make no apologies to anyone for writing what I did. As an old chess player I am willing to anticipate my opponents moves. First of all I would have at least two articles for this issue condemming my article. I know that this sounds Victorian and rather far fetched but its possible that the name of Penthouse magazine could be attacked. A Penthouse article was the source for my article. I won’t waste much time on this particular point. Penthouse is sold in the bookstore of this very college. What these magazines say shouldn't be taken lightly. Pent houses purpose is not only as a fun magazine. I fully realize that taking the word of a U.S. Senator at face value can be questioned. I have relatives in Europe that read French and British newspapers with the same facts Senator Abourezk presented. I realize that many facts and statistics will be presented against my article. The source of these so- termed facts must be looked at extremely closely. I would wager that the vast majority of these facts were obtained from Israeli sources and histories which were written by Jews. These facts shouldn’t be termed as history but a better word would be prop aganda. I only have one last thing to say. It is important as students that we look at both sides of an issue with an open mind. Don't accept an opinion as being true because its popular or your fearful. I must state that I respect my opponents opinion and intelli gence. Whether they do the same for me is their business. The more pressure which is put upon me the Larry N. Iannucci more it will probe my point. I would like to thank the U/D students who gave me support.
