PAGE. 10 (Continued from page 7) sadistic at the time and I never cleaned off the plates. I graduated from that job to become a madcap clerk at the Zayre Department Store for three years. It was there I moved and ticketed a million and one items, from Pantry Pride to Ty-De-Bol, and from Smucker’s to Summer’s Eve. I bid farewell to Zayre’s when I came to Utica, and boy, did I act sad when I left. (Actually, if I didn’t leave, the “supermarket music” they played day in and day out would have sent me to St. Lukes). And finally, last summer I worked as a handy man and locker room attendant at the Powelton Club, where I changed a few light bulbs and screwed in a couple of paper towel dispensers, while at the same time making sure the rich old Republican members of the club had plenty of hot water, soap and towels for their showers after a hard day of golfing. It may be simplified somewhat, but that is a basic snyopsis of my work experience. If all other things fail, I was thinking about becoming a taxi driver down in the city, until saw a movied called “Taxi Driver.” I do not use a rag but for any other purpose other than to wipe off my windshield. However, this is the land of opportunity, and I’m still bright eyed and eager, although certainly more sober. The problem that you might be qualified but lack the experience necessary leads me to the question: Just how much is the degree worth? When you were fresh out of high school without being over qualified,-and the year is 1972 or 73, could you have applied for and maybe got the job at entry level and work your way up in the 4-6 years of seeking your degree, to get that managerial position that you are now applying for with that degree 5nd can’t get??? If that’s so, I might have plans for my B.S.er degree after all. I will photostat five hundred copies of it and plaster it upside down in the walls of my room. It won’t be the prettiest looking wallpaper, but it will certainly be the most educational. We are so degree conscious in this society. But what would America do without its degrees? You’re supposedly a flunkey if you didn’t go on and get some sort of degree. You’ve got to realize that the importance of college is drummed into our heads because teaching has a lot of jobs involved, and without students, a lot of well bred and educated fellow human beings would have no jobs, and a lot of them would be like us, and they wouldn’t like that. Atlantic City, where they legalized casino gambling, is a case in point. The state of New Jersey is considering having the local state university establish a four year baccalaureate program for people who desire jobs that are managerial as well as on the floor (i.e., people who run the slot machines, roulette tables, blackjack along with numerous card games) of the casino. The degree would entail such courses dealing the “The Psychology of the Gambler,” ‘The Socio-Economic Status of the Gambler in Our Society,” “The History of Gambling,” “Why Do People Bet?”, “What People Experience When They Win and When They Lose,” as well as numerous statistic courses on the probability or odds of a person winning at a certain game. Add this up with your usual English and Arts and Sciences, and sure enough you have another program for another degree. You also have more people with degrees in Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics getting jobs as teachers at this learning institution. But to me, all three subjects rank low in my esteem. In my own personal experience, Psych teachers are some of the most messed up people I have ever met, yet they have a license to teach. In sociology, you’re offered the plight and differences of your fellow ma:.; the teacher I had sometimes would remember to exhibit a bleeding heart, but most of the time was too tired to go through the procedure. Statistics is a sham because as anyone knows who listens to our nation's economic indicators or unemployment figures, you can twist statistics to your own specifications. To sum up: I am quite sure (although I may be wrong) that people of average I.Q. intelligence may be suitably trained at these casinos to perform their jobs well enough without 4 years of their life taken up and $20,000 minimum spent to get a B.S. degree in gambling in order to work at the place. Big Dance Floor and Party Room for the over 21 crowd. Big Drink Specials during the week Remember! Meet You At The — Grape Vine — I was thinking the other day, “Maybe it’s just this whole Northeastern region that has a case of the blahs.” I am getting tempted to find out. One professor said to me that was basic to this effect, “If I was a young whippersnapper like you, I'd take off. There'd be nothing holding me down. H I couldn’t get a job here, I would go out west or anywhere the jobs would be. I wouldn’t wait for the jobs to come to-me, I’d go to the jobs. You’re young, alive, and unattached, and you’ve got wheels. Take off!” I kinda dug the inspiration behind it but then realized I have no relatives out in Texas, Arizona, or Oregon. I’d truck on down there by myself, no doubt, stay a couple of weeks at a “Holiday Inn” in order to get to know the area, the roads, and the housing situation better. As soon as I found myself a more permanent abode, I would start applying to the growth or career oriented companies. However, why would a firm in Texas or wahtever western state, hire any driftwood from New York State? It would be conceivable that they would be more interested in employing Texans, people that have roots in the community, who were born there, raised their families there, and enjoyed and suffered through whatever a whole Texan life has to offer. You remember the stink that was caused when a black Mississippi family came up to New York City just to get on their welfare rolls? Well, I wouldn’t be going through such obvious hatred, but I have a feeling that it will be there, if as indivisible as this great nation of ours. I have been rapping with a lot of students on what they are going to do or think they are going to do when they graduate from good old Upper Division. I asked one friend if he thought he was going to be able to secure $10,000 a year job. “Hey man, what are you jiving me for, man, when Ah gets back to the city, Ah ain’t even going to settle for less than $17,500.” I felt like saying “God bless you\ but I felt it would be inappropriate and I moved on. Another friend said, “Yeah, down on the island, you can usually make $20,000 a year selling insurance, then after a couple of years $40,000, and then $60,000 a year as an arson investigator, that is, if you don’t mind stepping through the ashes.” Listening to this good news I got all choked up, but realizing I might act like a dude if my eyes got all watery, I said “Hey, that's not bad” and I took off. I always wondered why my insurance premiums were so high, and now I had the answer. Some students I talked with are going to work for their quite successful fathers, but feel bummed out because they don't feel that is challenging enough. This reminds me of one of Telly Savalas’s more memorable quotes. “Being as rich as I am has its drawbacks. That certain element of unknown no longer exists for me. I am going to die rich, and I feel deprived because I now know how my life is going to turn out.” That's alright, Telly baby. You can give me all the money you have, and you can have back that certain unknown element that life is all about. One of the main things I dig about Upper Division is that just about everybody here has their chins up. Students still smile, they breathe in and out, their flesh is still young, their enthusiasm still eager, and then- potential still great. Yes, dear God, we are all young Americans. We still manage to have our chins up. While schools and industries were closing (and still are) due to the shortageof natural gas (now how could we have ever known that might happen?), and the citrus industry in Florida was being ruined by unusually cold weather (as of this writing, it is even worse), the nation became deeply engrossed in the execution of Gary Gilmore. In the two months before his execution, an incredible buildup of nationwide coverage began. Newspapers and TV had it continuously as one of their top stories, and a melodramatic folly for capital punishment swept the country, from just off the street hotheads to all the way to our prestigious Supreme Court. Gilmore, backed up with his probable belief that motivated his desire to die (this being the publicity, the TV, the reporters, the movie rights that would soon make him into a modern day martyr) got his wish to die, and was shot down like a dog. The reporters, over 150 of them, and the big agent with all the rights, were clamoring about the blood that was still dripping from the chair after they had removed Gilmore’s body. The reaction abroad was typified by the London Times, who summed it up and said the whole thing was a “grisly circus,” and “a sad spectacle for a nation so great.” PAPERSUN Now, down in Texas, John Connally and cohorts are not satisfied with just the execution, they want to put it on TV so everyone can see. Of course, they have a reason for that. It will help be a deterent against future crime. Once the little kiddies see all the pain you go through when you get electrocuted, that will change their minds about going out and killing someone when they get older. I’m quite sure in this instance the FCC will make an exception on their ban against violence on TV. How wonderful! Yes sir, folks, this is America. You might have to pinch yourself to believe it, but this is America. Your realization of that fact might depend on how brainwashed you’ve been. In this land of opportunity that is ours, I would like to wish you the best of luck in your job hunting endeavors, but I can’t. You’ll have to excuse me in this article. It’s just that I sometimes crash land on my face. THE NEXT PAPERSUN WILL BE COMING OUT IN 2 WEEKS We Would Greatly Appreciate If You Have Your Articles and Poems Typed. Thank You!
