By Blake Pitcher Staff Writer Roughly 2500 students attend SUNY Utica/Rome, making for a variety o f interests on and o ff the field. Do students think there are enough sports offered at this school? Pete Santana, a Computer In formation Systems major enjoys playing football, basketball and wrestling. He doesn’t play on any of the college’s teams, but when asked if he would try out for wres tling if it were offered, Santana an swered, “Hell, yeah!” Another sport not offered at this school is hockey. Just ask student Matt Marceau. He likes playing hockey because “it’s a fast-paced game with lots o f hits and lots o f ac tion.” Marceau played hockey at Thousand Islands High School in New York, and would be thrilled if SUNY Utica/Rome offered it. Jeff Whitehouse, who enjoys bowling and golf, says he would like the col lege to have a foot ball team, but not because he wants to be on it. “I like to go to the Whitehouse said. “I think the school offers a good amount o f sports for the number o f people who attend the school,” said Whitehouse, when asked if there was a need for more sports to be offered on campus. Junior Mike Kroeger likes to play sports to get some exercise and have some fun outside. When asked if there were any sports teams he wished w e re offered , K roeger m e n tioned tennis. He enjoys playing tennis because “it’s good physi cal exercise, and it’s fun too.” wrestling, hockey and tennis- these are some big name sports not of fered by SUNY Utica/Rome, but is there enough interest to support them? SUNY Utica/Rome Athletic Di rector Jim Klein said there is peri odic requests for new sports pro grams every couple o f years, but the interest needs to stay consistent. “Show me that the students want this,” said Klein, when asked about the possibility o f a new sports pro gram being started. He then men tioned when the baseball team was begun, and how they had the signa tures o f about 70 students claiming interest. It would be nice to see some different sports around here. Why doesn't this school offer more? I really wish they did and so do many others. Hear the call SUNY U/R, more sports.
