Shuttle Bus or Bust! by Chris Hurst Shuttle bus? What's a shuttle bus? Starting next semester there will no longer be a shuttle bus to supplement the UTA (Utica Transit Authority). A little history about the shuttle. It was first implemented when the new campus was opened, so as to provide transportation to the 3-4 different locations. Originally it took about an hour to shuttle people from the old campus to the new. It was paid for out of a special account from SUNY Central. This funding was temporary until the transition (switching from the old campus to the new one) was complete. This year marks the end of that transition and so the shuttle dies. In talking to Dave Keymer, Dean of Students, Dave expressed a concern about the students who did use the shuttle. His primary worry revolved around the students who don't have cars and are watching their financial situation. Some ideas about solving the problem have come up but nothing definite has been decided. One solution involved the use of a school van and driver who would make the trip. However due to insurance, drivers salary, and lack of money this idea is not feasible. Another idea is to promote car pooling among students and faculty. A number of students have expressed concern as to what they're going to do, along with some ideas of their own. Why does the shuttle leave the campus at 9:55 p.m. when classes get out at 10:00 p.m. and why not ask the UTA to run a bus at 10:10 p.m. to alleviate the problem. This is a problem that concerns all students. What's going to happen in the future when all, services that are essential to some, just disappear as the belt starts to get tighter? Any comments or suggestions can be directed to the Dean of Students in the Campus Center room 213.
