Purdy Re-Elected Trustees The annual meeting of the Rosen dale Union Free School took place on Tuesday evening at the school house on Main street in Rosendale. The regular routine of business was transacted with the reading of the minutes and reports and same were approved as read- Mrs. Mary Hill and Louis R. Purdy were again elected trustees for three years. Mrs. Hill received 23 votes and Purdy 55. Others who were nominated received only three or four votes. The budget this year was raised $600.00, therefore the village school tax will be a trifle higher. New Paltz was designated for the old and new graduates and Henry Myers' White Star Bus Line will have the contract for transportation of the pupils. There was a motion made that the janitor receive an increase of $50 in wages. This Was carried. A motion was made that the school buy the text books for the children. — --rCThW was -votod-down, therefore .the : text hooks will foe purchased from the Board of Education and will be paid for by the village. The sum of $150 was set aside for the painting of the outside of the building. Bids were received for the painting but were not opened. This will be attended to at the next school meeting, which will be held on the . first Tuesday of August, (the 2nd of August), 1938. Meeting adjourned. Town Ase ssors Hold Meeting A meeting of the town assessors of the county was called this morning at 10:30 at the court hoiise when the assessors met with representatives from the state tax commission for the purpose of ex amination of and approval of the assessment of state lands within the various towns. All o fthe towns were represent ed except Lloyd, which is the only town in the county which has no state land within its bounds. Each year this meeting is held for the purpose of examination of assess ments on state lands and for ap proval of such assessments by the state tax commission. ------------ O ------------ VILLAGE TAXES The village taxes may he paid at the home of the tax collector on John Street until July 31st, at five per cent. Firemen ’ s Convention July 15 and 16 Everything is in readiness for the third annual convention, of the Ulster County Volunteer Firemen ’ s Association to be held Friday eve ning and Saturday in Ellenville. The business session will be held Friday evening and the convention closes with the colorful firemen ’ s parade on Saturday afternoon. Rosendale will be represented in the parade by the Active Hose Co. No. 1 of Rosendale, Tillson Vol. Fire Co, and St. Remy. It is expected that Wallkill will be selected as the convention vil lage for 1939. Fifty fire companies are expect ed to participate in the big parade on Saturday afternoon. The as sembly call will be sounded at 2 o ’ clock that afternoon, and the parade will get under way short ly before. 3 o ’ clock.-; _ ^ ^ Thousands of visitors are ex? pected to throng the streets of El lenville on Saturday, and the O. & W. Railroad will run a special train to Ellenville that day, leav ing Kingston at 8:30 o ’ clock and returning leaving Ellenville at 6:14 o ’ clock. State troopers will assist the El lenville police in handling the traf fic problem as thousands of cars are expected to roll into the vil lage starting early in the morning. ------------ O ------------ AROUND TOWN Elsie Katonah has been present ed with a fine Shetland pony and saddle by her father. Elsie is hav ing a fine time riding her new pony. Our village president has many new plans for improving Rosen dale. Let us give him a boost, neighbors — that means all of you. Reservations must be with Joe O ’ Connor, Bloomington (phone Kingston 928-J-2) twenty-four (24) hours in advance of any roast or ride. ------------ O ------------ TOWNSEND CLUB HELD THEIR OUTING SUNDAY The Kingston Townsend Club enjoyed a delightful picnic outing at Max Ferro ’ s Pine Grove, at Stony Hollow on the Ashokan road Sunday afternoon. A number of the club members reside in the vicinity. This was a friendly so cial visit with those members. After enjoying a restful visit amid the pine trees the club repaired to Ferro ’ s ice cream parlor where ice cream and soft drinks were serv ed. Here they sang many of the Townsend Crusade songs to the delight of all. Wilbur J. Stone and family, of Walden, were guests at the gath ering. Mr, Stone is president of the recently organized Townsend Club at Walden. A great many members of the Townsend Club live In the town of Rosendale. . A terrific wind and rain storm struck Rosendale Township Mon day at about 3:30 P. M. Many trees were blown down and con siderable damage done. LeFever Falls bore the brunt of the' storm. As the wind swept through this hamlet it mowed down trees in all directions. The top story of William Turner ’ s Cot tage was completely destroyed by a large elm about 24 inches in diameter which fell over on the top of the building caving in the roof and tearing away both lower porches. The neighbors helped clean up the place. Mr. Turner sent for Fred Yonker and his men to repair the top part of the build ing. The Hudson Electric and Tele phone crews were kept busy for some hours repairing wires that had been torn down by falling trees and branches. A large branch from a tree fell on one of Dittmar ’ s bungalows but did very little damage. The Duffy home just escaped being hit by a large maple shade tree which stood at the side of the house. The tree fell over to .^^ide.pf J.he. cottage^ ------_ ' ----------- -O- ----------- Will Hold , Social Party The members of St. Patrick ’ s Catholic Church in Whiteport will hold a social party Thursday eve ning, July 28th, 1938. This party is being held for the benefit of the church. ------------ O ------------ QUILT EXIUBIT AND FOOD SALE Many rare and antique quilts, dating from the eighteenth century, to the present day, will be dis played Saturday, July 16th, both afternoon and evening, at the Tillson Reformed Church Hall. The show, held under the aus pices of The Ladies ’ Aid Society, is the first of its kind ever to be held in Tillson. A most compre hensive collection of handiwork wwill be on display, including crochet bedspreads, tablecloths, chair sets, embroidered and knit- ' ted articles. Included in the exhibition will be a group of fifteen hand-painted pictures done in oils and water colors. The food sale will consist of home-made cakes, pies, bread, crullers, cookies, etc. Refreshments will be on sale. ------------ O ------------ LE FEVER FALLS Thomas Gow and family and John Helmer and family, each have rented a bungalow for the summer on the Klein property. Henry Mullmyer of Brooklyn is enjoying his vacation at Dit tmar ’ s Homestead Farm. Odd Fellows Rent Grange Hall The' Rosendale Odd Fellows have rented the upper part of the Ros endale Grange Hall and will take possession by the first of August. The place will be newly decorat ed the renovated j to suit the needs of the new tenants. From this year on the commit tee has decided to keep the Thurs day in the week of September 16 as a permanent day for the Tri- Episcopai flower show. Refreshments will be free. This event also gives their fol lowers an opportunity of meeting intimately their newly elected officers. Tickets may be obtained now at the Legion Memorial Building, 18 West O ’ Reilly street, or by tele phoning its custodian, Lester Barth, at 1914. ------------ O ------------ Card Party A Success There was a large attendance at the card party which was held at St. Peter ’ s Hall in Rosendale on Wednesday night.
