It gets big ger and better each year. This year the festival will be held September 8 - 9 at the firemen’s field on Canandaigua Road. Admission is only $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for senior citizens, $1.00 for kids 6-14 and 5 and under are free. Parking is free and handicapped accessible. It is spon sored by the Macedon Center Fire Dept., the Macedon Center United Methodist Church, and the Macedon Historical So ciety. Gates open both days at 8 AM. Ama teur competition begins at 9 AM on Sat urday. The events include log rolling, two-man crosscut, buck saw, chain saw, log chop, and fire starting. Local lum berjacks are encouraged to come out and participate. This is a great opportunity for the beginner to become familiar with the timber sport. Equipment and safety gear will be provided. Some of the professionals will be on hand to offer advice on how to im prove technique or to help you get started in the sport. At 5 PM Saturday and Sun day, the grease pole climb will take place - so gather up 4 people and you’ve got a team! The pole is covered with Crisco so make sure you wear clothes you can throw away. First place team takes home $250.00! Five years ago the New York State Professional Lumberjack Association approached the Lumberjack Festival committee to see if they would like to sponsor a professional event. Pros from all over the country and Canada would meet in Macedon Center on the Sunday of the festival. Today this event is one of the highest paying competitions in the northeast. So come out to see the pros, get a “cookie” signed and then watch them on ESPN in October. Competition will start at 10:30AM on Sunday. There will be ax throwing, hot saw, two man crosscut, spring board, and more. There is also a craft and collectables sale. If you would like to be a vendor, call 315-986-8140. Commercial exhibi tors include portable band saws, wood carvers, landscaping equipment, fire places and more. There will be a petting zoo, crafts, and fish pond for the kids. A variety of food is available all day, pie and ice cream for dessert. The lumber jack breakfast is served Sat. 7-11 AM and Sun. 8-Noon. “Come as you are” church services are held at 5PM Satur day and 9:30AM Sunday. On Sunday there will be a raffle with donations from local businesses. This is going to be the greatest year ever with fun for the whole family. Senator Mike Nozzolio recently attended the Wayne County Fair where he had the opportunity to meet with Emma Andrew, the 2012 New York State Dairy Princess. Emma has been traveling all across New York State representing the American Dairy Association & Dairy Council at fairs, farm meetings and special events. The Wayne County Fair draws visitors from all across the region and provides valuable informa tion about importance o f agriculture to the Finger Lakes area. Thursday August 23, 2012 What's News Walk on War of 1812 Day on Great Lakes Seaway Trail Saturday, September 29 is New York State’s day to commemorate the War of 1812, much of which took place along the waters of St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Ni agara River, and Lake Erie in New York and Pennsylvania. Nine com munities along those waters and on the 518-mile Great Lakes Seaway Trail National Scenic Byway offer 1812-theme self-guided walking tours daily dawn-to-dusk. The 3.1 and 6.2-mile walks in Ogdensburg, Sackets Harbor, Os wego, Pultneyville, Youngstown, Lewiston, Williamsville, and Buf falo, NY; and Erie, PA, are sanc tioned by the American Volkssport Association (AVA). There is no charge to complete the walks. Walkers must regis ter in the Walkbox at each starting point business. Anyone carrying a Volkssport logbook can purchase the official credit for $3.00. Those completing the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Walks in any of the nine com munities can purchase commemora tive pins ($5 each) featuring differ ent symbols of the war, including a sailing ship, cannon, soldier. Fort Ontario and Fort La Presentation, crossed rifles, the burning of Buf falo, a young America’s flag and the battle flag of the USS Brig Niagara. WCHS Exhibit Preview Party, \Pre-history: Bones and Arrows The opening of the new exhibit, “Prehistory: Bones and Arrows” was held on August 23 at 7pm at the Museum of Wayne County History in Lyons. The featured guest speaker was Preston E. Pierce EdD, On tario County Historian. Dr. Pierce presented a program on Ephraim George Squier, who is considered the “father of New York” anthro pology and archaeology in the 19th Century. After the talk attendees were invited to preview the new ex hibit which will feature the Pirrello Mastodon bones found in Arcadia in 1973 and Native American artifacts. The exhibit also included an archae ological dig right in the Changing Exhibition Room!
