Page 26 Newark-Wayne Hospital unveils new Endoscopy Suite Employees, supporters and friends of Newark-Wayne Community Hospital gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting for the new endoscopy suite. Part of the hospital’s $13.1 million major modern ization project, the suite will accommo date the growing number of patients who are seeking gastroenterology care at the hospital. ‘T’m proud to say we have a great team of care providers here in our endos copy unit,” remarked Mohamed Alsala- hi, M.D., a gastroenterologist who will perform much of his work in the new suite. “Now, we finally have a facility that will allow us to reach our full poten tial and provide the best care and service possible for our patients.” Alsalahi was one of several speak ers in a program that also featured Mark Clement, president and CEO of Roches ter General Health System; Mark Klyc- zek, president of Newark-Wayne Com munity Hospital; Bob Havrilla, chair of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Board; and New York State Senator Mi chael Nozzolio. Other leaders from the region also attended the celebration. “The motivation of our hospital’s ma jor modernization project is to grow and change in order to meet the healthcare needs of this community,” explained Klyczek. “With the help of our com munity—our team members, supporters, patients and local leaders—we can make sure Wayne County has extraordinary healthcare for years to come. It’s ap propriate that our fundraising campaign, which is supporting so much of this mod ernization, is called: Transforming Care, because with your help, that is what we are doing.” “The board has been committed to providing world-class care here in Wayne County,” said Bob Havrilla. “In collaboration with the rest of Rochester General Health System, that is exactly what our team is doing here at Newark- Wayne.” The endoscopy (gastroenterology) service has experienced significant growth over the last three years (17.5% increase in patient volume), despite op erating in a facility with limited space. The new endoscopy suite is twice the size of the current space in order to ac commodate more patients. Additionally, patients and their loved ones will find the new space to be more comfortable with greater privacy and dignity. Other Projects Related to the Major Modernization Project: The endoscopy suite is one element of a comprehensive major modernization project that is taking place at the hospi tal. Other elements of this effort include: • the construction of the new emer gency department (ED) that is scheduled to open in spring of 2013; • the creation of a patient access cen ter to house central registration, pre-ad- MohamedAlsalahiy M.D. the gastroenterologist who will perform much of his work in the new suite. mission testing, the lab draw/specimen collection department and a patient re ception area; • the addition of a new facility for the adult day health care program, which opened in late 2010; • the new digital mammography suite, which opened in late 2010; and • the relocation of the non-invasive cardiology facility, which opened in the fall of 2011. The new emergency department is the centerpiece of this modernization project. The current emergency department was designed to accommodate 11,000 patient visits per year. In 2011, that same facil ity encountered approximately 22,000 patient visits. This project will help the hospital and care providers reduce wait ing times, increase patient capacity, cre ate a fast track service for non-emergen cy patients, utilize new technology and enhance comfort and dignity for patients and families. As Newark-Wayne Com munity Hospital is part of Rochester General Health System, this modern ization project will also give patients in Wayne County better access to the spe cialized physicians at Rochester General Hospital through telehealth technology.
