Page 2 1 Times of Wayne County-TIMESEXTRA May 12,2011 EDITORI ALS&O PI N IONS THE LAST WORD | by Devin Holdraker Spend Wisely It’s coming. That special time of year when people gather to celebrate one of the most important days of the year...my birthday. Sure, my brother’s wedding is right around the corner, and no doubt will take much of the fan fare, but my birthday takes a backseat to nobody. I never have a party or even go out to din ner. Most times I stay home with Christy and watch mindless TV. But for me, my birthday is an excuse to spend money I don’t have, buying myself something I don’t need. A foolish thing to do espe cially since most would consider me pretty conservative. I suppose I decided a few years ago that I should reward myself for another year down, and hopefully a year closer to being a millionaire. Although my bank account is still a bit lacking, my commit ment to irresponsible spending remains a constant. A few years back I bought myself a nice watch. I had lost dozens of watches over the years. I have a bad tendency of taking them off and leaving them places. Maybe spending alot on a nice one would make me keep track of it a little better. It has. Fours years later and I still have the same watch. Others have come and gone in that time, but not old faithful. Three years ago on my birthday, a similar decision was made. It was just two weeks before my wedding. Money was tight as ever, as final preparations were being made for the big day. I had been looking for a new car for a week or two. I didn’t really need a new car but I replace them every few years due to the miles I put on driving the whole county. On a whim, a stopped at a higher end dealship that specialized in Audis and Mercedes. As I pulled into the lot, I stopped and stared at a shiny silver Mer cedes. Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted a Mercedes. 24 Hours later, I was driving home in my new car. Huge grin and the large car payment that went with it. Three years in and I’m still smiling. As June approaches I begin to feel the itch once again, only now I have a son to think of. What kind of parent would I be to go out and buy another expensive car knowing all the expenses involved with having children? That settles it. I choose responsibility. I’ll get the extended war ranty this time. About The Times of Wayne County Deadline for stories and ads for the Sunday TIMES is Friday at NOON.
