: '. > just. Who i; is going to be attending- 'Thursday's Awareness Workshop on sat anism./@&& at Pal-Mac?. I For the'.past'seirerl months, it has been the \subject\ that simply wouldn't go . away. For.,countless years, the rumors have surfaced and dissipated as traces of the 'evil doers: lingered. 'We, as human beings, have a deep seeded desire to know the unknown, to- go where no one 'has gone before. According to Jack Robinson from the Wayne County Sheriff's Department,. there really.hasn\t been a significant increase in' the 'satanim' cult in past years, but many in the community don't buy that. A reported handful of 'social rejects' have dabbled in a form of copycat 'satan practices' - usually with a couple of six packs of beer and illegal drugs as a catalyst to the proceedings. -Who are these individuals? - Quite frankly, they are the segment of society that need some sort of artificial sense of power to sustain their own miserable existence. In last week% article on, satanism by ~ina ~ifiham, she wrote: \. . .the classic ' . profile of a teenage dabbler is a white adolescent male from a middle-class suburban family, who has a history of significant alcohol and drug abuse. What he's looking for is power and acceptance. . .\ . This past week I journeyed up to the famous 'Prospect Hill' and entered the'old . water filtration plant; The main entrance had been sealed off, but even a not-too- , enterprising person can easily find other, less noticable entrances to the chambers. Upon entering one of the chambers, obvious spray paintings of various teenage . scrawlings, mixkd ;with some satanic overtones were splattered about. Yes, I - - inadvertently srepped on some dead, rotted animal. OK, now you know, there are spray painted words and-a probable dead.cat up on-prospect Hill. To those people who.fee1 that I, along with members of the police, are hiding or holding back something - forget it! A smal1:group of mixed-up kids have managed to incite.a community into action. But yhat .action? And at.what price? Now, copycCts of the copycats are spray paintingslogans on a'kick? and every time one surfaces, adevit a$pears behind every bush. Whenever a cat or dog disappears, the owner maintains at , - least a thought of possible devil infestation. Enough is enough! The rumors are bordering on the ridiculous and the absurd. -What is it about the human character that ' needs to feed on rumors. Our own ingrained fears and troubled minds need answers . that-cannot be answered. a . , What makes us stronger than the 'dabblers' in the occult - is that the positive moral fiber of the vast majorityis stronger than the obsessive need of a handful of . social misfits to dominate with corruptive power. Enough life and character has been lost in our communities withdut compounding the problems further. Who will be attending Thursday's ~warene~s Workshopon Satanism/ Occult? ,Teachers, police, religious leaders, reporters, parents and some~hildren with a need to know why evil exists. The.y may come away from the meeting disappointed, but at least better informed on cults. Please do not expect to come away with'answers as to why two murders occurred in Palmyra. The police cannot expound any more on details regarding that unfortunate case than you already.know. ' Who should attend Thursday's Awareness Workshop on Satanism/ Occult? The few parents that probably won't - the ones who lost a large part of their teenagefs love and respect long before 'satanism' reared its ugly head. Perhaps we would be better off-conducting a seminar on Family.Values - A 'how to' workshop- on eating family meals together, checking on schoolwork progress, talking, kissing and hugging our children more than ever. Perhaps a course on caring - ' what our children aie exposed- to, and who theh friends are, and what time they came . home last night, would be beneficial. But those are tangible things -things we ean see and influence in a positive way. Hmmmm. We probably wouldn't have time for that Advertising and story deadline for the TIMES is Thursday Noon preceding publication date. The TIMES'^^ distributed weekly on Tuesdays. Telephone-Woes in Walworth to Heal To the Editor, The residents of Walworth township have long suffered a telephone system which has bordered on the ridiculous. The community has been served by five different telephone exchanges, but few of us could call qthers in the township without making a toll'call. Since most of - the town is in the Wayne,Central Schooldistrict, the students in the village of W alworth have to make toll calls in order to-call the junior and senior high schools and- many - of their school frie~da 1, - . - ~ot o@y has the t~wn~been'fragmented by having to, make \long distance\ calls tmpeople a short distance away, but the base telephone rates for most of us have been exorbitant because of \mileage costs. In other words we have been charged according to. the -distance we are from the f own telephone center. Those people living in the \597 pay mileage from thkkresidences to the telephone station on canal Street in Palmyra. -, The Walworth Community Unity Coalition, endorsed by the town board, has met 'with the Public Service Com- mission, New York Telephone and Rochester ~elephone. As -a result' of these meetings,. several e:xciting things are about to.happen: 1. New York Tde-phone has consented to dropping the mileage charges in - Ontario, Macedon and Palmyra ex- changes, if the Public Service Commis- sion agrees, effective January 1,1991. 2. By January 12,' 1991, calls -between , the Ontario and ~acedon, eichan~es will be free of charge. - . . . 3. By November 1991 calls -between ,. ' Oritafib'and Fairport, dnd between , : ~acedon.a?d.-~ebster bill. be free of charge. All areas of the township-,will be - benefiting but the residentski ~alworth having a 397 exokange stand to gain most. In additionto the abolition ofthe mileage charges, the residents 'are being offered the opp~rtunity to transfer to the Macedon exchange and receive all- the benefits which Macedon eniovs .., .I including the ability to call ~dm~ra, ~ast Rochester, Fairport, Macedoh, Rochester, Victor,. Ontpr,io and Webster without making a. toll call. , Very shortly, probably .i.n early October, the Walworth area residents' with 597- numben will be- s$weyed to find out if they .are willing td be'&&- ferred to the -Macedon exchange. If approved, this will take ;place about March of 1992. -I[ sincerely urge the Walworth resi- dents in thePalmyra exchange to vote to approve such a transfer. Jay Taber 2203 Peqfield -Road ! Walwom, New York .- . . . CTruth~I as Well as cRumorss Need verification. Dear Editor, L ;,. % . L ,, . , I don't place a great deal ef faith in ru'mors. When a \truth\- is makihg the rounds, I require verifiable procif before I'll believe it. : , , However; -nothing 'jess' should be required when officials (local or other- , wise) say that rumors aren't true. In short, if rumors need werfication to become a truth, denials deserve no less. On August 17, Wayne County Sher- iff ~ichard Piscotti said (on a channel 8 &e*s~ast) that there is an active group of'satanists in Palmyra, but no proof had been uncovered of a link-between them and Chad campbell: Yet, just',a few days later, Palmyra Police Chief David ~alton said that, \In addition to na link between Campbell and satanists, there was indeed no evidence of satanism in Palmyra-at all.\ Dalton's .remarks were published in separate stories by the TIMES and the COURIER-JOURNAL. Yet, to my knowledge, neither paper has addressed the apparent contradictions between remarks . . made by eiscotti-and Dalton. In the TIMES, Dalton vlaid the blame for occult grafitti at the feet of kids, but, if 'one is to believe that children are automatically responsible for grafitti, then it must be remembered. that a .14 year old -''kidm has been charged with two brutal slayings. Again,, in the TIMES, as well as the COURIER-JOURNAL', chief Dalton said that any activity that inay exist is just people attempting to impress.others: It is doubtfu! that a court of law would accept that kind of, kpp6sition as ev- idence, but, if hunches were allowable, it would be just aseasy to suppose that the murdei- of innocent children wouid make the ultimate impression on the kind of mind that worships evil. During the aforementioned tele- * vision broadcast, a reporter said that a ' 2:. . . . '.II - ?r _ .. ./ visit to Prospect Hill revealed satanic symbols*painted on the walls of the old water filtration plant, but during their . abscence ;tcj retrieve, a video camera, the building was freshly painted over with Christian, syrnboIs. It would seem logical to ask \why?\ .and by \whom?\. I kiave seen satanic type desecration within Palmyra cemetary.- The Biblical. number of the beast (666) was spray- painted months agp' on a tombstone that .stands 'in close proximity to the Roger's Chapel. This blasphemy' may have been perpetrated by kids, but it is not kid stuff..' i 2 Even thoug&a suspect hasi been arrested, charged, -and awaits' trid, the case should not be considered closed. If I understand our justice system at all, a person is considered innocent until proven guilty. Chad Campbell may or hay not have cocbmmited this crime. Chad Campbell may or may not have qcted alone/ with or without outside influence. That is up to the judicial system to decide, and for us to accept. But; when the pdice cliie'f says for the record that tracked down,\ one has how seriously they are well meaning though rumors. more constitute fact Whether or - not the wcult has anything to do with the tragic events df this summer, therecan be only one truth about organized satanism in ~gmyra. If this abortion (satanism) exists here, legal though it may be,: citizens have a right to know about it, look it in- the eye, and see if it can stand the light of day. James A. Pollot, Jr. E.
