Home Birth in Walworth rings Glad Tidings to Pastor and Family Reverend Pat Hernandez, pastor of the Lincoln Baptist Church, '4966 Lincoln Road, was still planning to give the sermon Sunday, but finally conceded that sermon to someone else, after delivering 4 baby boy at h5me on Saturday night. The baby's birth was a special one, not only for the Hernandez family for also for the Town of Walworth. According to sources, this was the first baby actually born at home in the town in the last eight years. Reverend Hernandez and her family have been here for about a year and a half. Pat and her husband Jorge have two other children, daughters Danica (4%) and Mya (299, but this was their first at-home birth. \Our first daughter was born at Strong Memorial Hospital, and that was not totally comfortable for me,\ said Pat. \I wanted rooming in and I had to keep asking for her. With the second one we used a Doctor and Midwife team who had a birthing center at their home. I was more comfortable and Jorge was with me. When I found out this time 1 was pregnant, I knew I wanted a home birth,\ said \Reverend Pat\. She reported that she had con- tracted with a midwife, Pat Deivel of Monroe County, to deliver her child and all was set for the birth to occur around July 1st. Nature, however, moved things along on Saturday morning and Pat called the midwife at about 3:30 p.m. with a report of contractions. \I told her they were 5 minutes apart, but I was sure they wouldn't last, and I just wanted her to know. I told her I would phone her back,\said Pat. Not realizing at the time that the midwife-was actually delivering another baby, Pat called back about a half hour later with pains only 2 minutes apart and moving fast. \She couldn't get here right away. I began to get realize we were going to have to do this ourselves,\ Pat recalled. The Hernandez children were at their neighbor, Angela , Gefell's house and by the time she was called to come with the Lincoln -Fire Dept. in the Ladies Auxiliary and is trained for certain emergency situatio'ns. She felt however that she needed some quick answers and phone EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), Bill Kurrash from the Lincoln Fire Department. Bill apparently phoned the Walworth Am- &lance for assistance. Meanwhile, Jorge was on the phone with the midwife, helping to deliver his child. \I had the phone up to my ear, holding it on my shoulder, and I was listening to her. She was trying to make sure the cord was not in the way. When 1 said it wasn't, she told me the next push should bring the baby. I said, Oh, here come the'shoulders, and he was out.\ Angela and Jorge delivered the baby, Danica and Mya were close by, Pat was resting well, and the Walworth Ambulance personnel were on hand to help cut the cord and reassure everyone. The baby boy (as yet unnammed) was born at 6:04 p.m. on June 16th, and weighed 7% lbs. He was pronounced very healthy by the Sarah, the second midwife of the team, when she arrived about 7:30 p.m. News of the birth was happily spreading around town within hours and the TIMES met with the - Hernandez family and their three-hour old baby that night. Congratulations and best wishes.
