GANANDA TIMES - PAGE 2 \A Different Mnkle . . . 9l I normally refuse to run letters to the editor withobt a signature. In this very specialcase, however, I will make a once-in-a-1ifetime.exception. After reading this response, I was very pleased that the package and accompanyingnote came an~ny~pusly. It is in response to my editorial in last week's paper entitled: \Winds of Chapge.\ T ' Dear Ron, Really liked your editorial this week! Please consider this: When somethigg doesn't taste the same as it used to, it may be -better to change it by adding something new. Hostess Twinkies now come- with a fruit and cream filling. Hostess added something new and now its product is more appealing. Consider this: If you take away the filling, you have nothing left but an empty sponge cake, but if you only have filling, you have nothing to hold it together. You peed both the cake and the filling to make your 't winkie 'a success. A Gananda is a much needed filling in- our Walworth cake. Your young, energetic, enthusiastic, , citizens . are to be applauded in all their ventures. We need each other working side by side to make the whole a success. Hope the new taste in these twinkieigives us all s&nething to work for and think about. Fondly, a resident who is looking forward to 'glasnost' and solidarity in our township PLEASE NOTE: The above message was mailed to me with a package of \Fruit Filled Hostess Twinkies!'' Nice touch, and nicely put. IN OTHER ESCAPADES AROUND TOWN.. . Congratulations to Ken and Judy Soscia and their Voter Registration Committee. Their campaign for voter registration is well under way. The Gananda area was divided-among nine committee persons: Shirley Skaprewsky, Tricia Owens, Carl Vroman, Daniel ~ohabir, Sharon Davies, Noellen Griffin, Janine Webb, Dan Cane and Sue Lombard. They began canvassing the area to ensure that all residents were registered to vote. Perhaps the other voting'districts could mount voter registration drives of their own? If interested call Ken or Judy at 986-2365. ... Carl Vroman battles wits with black bear ... on a recent camping trip down in ' the woods of ~enns~lvania, Carl and his childreri Laura and Paul were asleep in their tent. Paul siddenly awoke and noticed something had begun pushing the tent and sniffing around his still-sleeping son's head. \I smelled it, I knew that is was a bear immediately,\ said Carl. \I slowly moved forward and lifted the flap. There it was, a big old black bear just roaming around the camp site,\ he added. In the morning a site inspection revealed that the fly of the tent was shredded. Did Carl's wife, Anne, who was not on the excursion with him, run to his side upon his return and soothe his tattered nerves? HECK NO! 'It's a good thing he had plenty of \White Cloud\ .along with him,\ she commented. Let me begin by congratulating you on your first issue-of the Gananda Times. I think a community-based paper is certainly needed in this area, and I know your paper will be a success. I am?writing this letter to express a concern over-an i'ssue that I have been brewing about for the last six months. Actually, I have been waiting for- a forum and hopefully this letter will be printed in the Gananda ~imes; My husband and I have lived- in- Gananda for six years. We have watched the community into one that we are proud to be a part of. .Part of that growth began when The Station was opened a few years ago. What a wonder- ful wholesome store it was. I remember homemade wreaths, homebaked bkeads,, and just a warm atmosphere generated by John; the first manager. I looked forward to stopping in there. every morning on my way to work where I was always greeted' by a smiling em- ployee rea& to chat a bit. My husband arid I also enjoyed bringing our out-of- town visitors to The Station'just to see how dce it was. We'd walk in the front entrance to a foyer that was refreshingly clean and riglit away the smell .of 'brownies baking would make you want to linger. Lucille Bender would always ask how the kids were, and it was genuinely a pleasure to shop there. Granted the prices were a bit high then. However, now you'd think their labels had extra zeros on them in error. . Although the prices'are not the topic of this letter, it is certainly worth mention- ing. The point is the atmosphere is gone and some of that atmosphere came from previous 'management and left when the current management decided they knew better. To exemplify my opinion, let me relay to you my lwt trip to The Station. I was buying subs while my two year old - was fiddling around with a candy display in the middle of the store. I spotted the new manager and asked him why they put fhe candy in the middle of the store where two year olds can grab at it, throw it, eat it, and whatever else two year olds want to do. His response to me was \That's the point.\ I don't need a pompous reply to an intelligent question while. I'm waiting to pay for subs I've ordered. I am a cus- tomer and worth more. As he turned his back on me, I realized that pride was - gone and tacky was in. Keep in mind, that I have spent quite a bit pf money in The Station. I was a good customer because I wanted .me station to succeed. Previous manage- ment had talked about having a small annual Farmers Market and Craft Fair at The Station. Now look at the place. How symbcilic it was to see the oak cabinet for sale in the nowVdhy lobby and the old checkout counter replaced with a Slurpee machine. Especially disappointing was the replacement of the homemade crafts. ,with Pal-Mart caps and plastic travel mugs. I'm sure and won't be surprised if the Blue Heron etched in glass is soon covered by a neon light blinking \GAS UP HERE.\ I'm going to end this letter with a firm resolution that this train is not stopping at that station again. I'm driv- ing to the nearest other station, Hess, that is! Beth Platt Walworth, N.Y. 14568 REALTORS\ 166 Padett's ind ding, Fairport, NY -14450 223-1500 73 Main Street. Macedon, NY 14502 986-3200 .
