\THE STATION\ MANAGEMENT RESPONDS TO CUSTOMER CONCERNS \ Operations manager Bob Richards and Pa1 Mart Owner Dave Williamson sitting in eating area at The Station in Gananda New Jail Proposal Passes First. . Hurdle .. . - The Wayne County Board of Super- visors overwhelmingly passed a resolution to begin construction on the new proposed jail expansion. The pro- posal for $812,467 allocates funds for preliminary selection of architect, engineer and construction manager for the project. Actual construction of the 106 bed facility is expected to begin in the spring of 1990. The total budget for the project is estimated at $9,760,000. \We don't anti- cipate any increase over our projected budget,\ said Howard Keaton of the Wayne County Building and Grounds Department. Walworth Town Supervisor Carlyle Darron was one of only 2 dissenting votes on the fifteen member Board of Supervisors. (The vote was 12 in favor, 1 abstention and 2 no votes). Mr. Darron responded that he felt there had to be other alternatives to the large expend- iture. Macedon Town Supervisor Stu Carlson was out of town for the vote, but heartily supports the plan. \There has been a steady cost and number of increase since 1983. Based on projections within the next five to ten years, annual costs for shipping and housing prisoners to other facilities outside of Wayne County would be in the millions,\ said Carlson. \Two things are important in this issue; the new facility will save us a whale of a lot of money in the long run and will put us in the position .of being able to board prisoners from other counties and thus create revenues for us. Also, along with the jail, we have a strong commitment to continue searching far new alterna- tives to jail,\ he added. (Continued on page 4) Gan&da Times P.O. Box 406 Walworth, New York 14568 Bulk Rate U.S. Postage PAID Permit No. -9 Walworth, NY Postal Customer A recent rash of phone calls and letters concerning The \Station\, the local .grocery store in Gananda, . prompted the Gananda Times to inter- ; view both the current management of , the facility, and many members of the , Gananda community. The store, located . at 329O.Canandaigua Road in the town : of Walworth has been a focal point of: the Gananda -community since its in- ception a few years ago. According to : Beth Platt of 1566 Wakerobin Court in Gananda, \the atmosphere\ is gone.. . The Station has been rumored to - have been losing as much as $5000 monthly under the past management. In March of last year, Norman and Nelson Leenhouts owners of the propetty, sold the site to Pal-Mart. Dave Williamson, along with his brothers Larry and Dean, opened their first Pal-Mart store in 1984. They presently have nine locations including The Station in Gananda. \Since the new people took over, the place has deteriorated\ was the comment of Patricia Middlebrook of 3363 Wildflower Drive. \It's not half as clean as it used to be. The prices have gone way up and generally no one I've talked to likes it,\ she added. \I knew people that literally did all of their grocery shopping there, but not any more,\ Patricia said. , Sandy Briggs of 3309 Foxglove Circle, said \They've jacked the prices way up and simply are not accommo- dating any more.\ \It used to be really friendly, and everybody would have a smile on their face. Now I simply don't go there unless I have no other choice,\ she added. Middlebrook added that the eating area is dirty and \They (the new manage- ment) took out the ice cream cones that were a community draw after baseball games and the such. ''\They don't under- stand Gananda, we took our Station personally,\ she added. Anne Vroman of 1587 Waterford New managei, ~n'sh Knox will be Road said that the \ambiance\ and the with husband, Jim at \station 99 \personalities\, that made The Station, are gone. \I only go to the Station when Dave Williamson, in defense of his I'm desperate,\ she added. \I also miss , store, said that The Station is not a the crafts corner where local people 'museum.' \We simply have to run it could buy and sell gifts,\ said Anne, \I profitably. We know there are problems hate it!\ was her final comment. (Continued on page 4) Gananda Sets Date for Roof Replacement Referendum The Gananda Board of Education will ask district residents to approve a referendum that would allow the spend- ing of up to $577,000 for a roof replace- ment on the Middle School/High School. The vote is scheduled for Tues- day, October 3 from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm at the District Office. The decision to replace the roof was made after studies on the present conditions had been made by the board and district's facilities committees. Both groups worked with consultants~from Stetson Harza, an architect and engi- neering firm from Utica, New York that specializes in roof applications. The -final recommendation was for an im- mediate replacement of the existing roof.- - The roof has been plagued with problems since its installation. In spite of repairs, water often leaks through into .the school's interior. Super- intendent Dr. Larry R. Pedersen described repairs to the roof as often being 'futile attempts.' \The current roof is adhered by specialized 'tube- locked nails' that have created hundreds of perforations that water soaks and then leaks through. Architects and engineers no longer recommend this type of nail for roof application.\ said Dr. Pedesen. If approved, the project would be completed during the summer of 1990. The recommended replacement roof system for the building, is a foamed-in- place polyurethane with two top coat- ings of urethane. The addition of the urethane over the existing insulation would cause an increase in the 'R' value of the total roof system, resulting in an energy savings during the heating season. More information about the refer- endum will be presented to the public at 7:30 pm, Thursday, September 21, at the Middle School/ High School.
