Octoberfest Co-chairman Mark Ward I Waterford Sidewalks Stir Controversy Waterford Road residents in the town of Walworth had mixed reactions to the sidewalks being put on their street this week. Larry Shufelt of 1723 Water- ford Road expressed the feelings of many, saying \I think it's great, it really keeps the kids off the street.\ Almost all the residents echoed similar feelings and at the same time voiced concerns regard- ing the use of asphalt over concrete. \I 'used to live over in the town- houses, where they put in concrete and I prefer them to the asphalt,\ said John Strong of 1607 Waterford. \There's definitely problems with the uneven coat of asphalt they put down here,\ he added. \There certainly is concern about how long this thing (the sidewalks) will last,\ he went on to say. Strong was also . upset about the lack of communication between the developer and the people involved. \If my neighbor hadn't told me what was going on, I never would have known about this,\ he said. \It's nice to know you're not going to get hit by a car,\ was the statement of Joyce Stadtmiller of 1639 Waterford Road. \Our son, Daniel (age 5), 'is the most thrilled about the new sidewalks,\ she added. Bill and Gay Boggess of 16 1 1 Water- ford expressed concerns about their trees that line the new sidewalk. \There is a lot of root damage to our trees from the digging,\ said Bill. \The trees have been here for years, they directly affect my property value. Who is going to replace them if they die,\ he wondered. The Boggess' also rightly voiced a concern over a mailbox that stuck out @ Gananda Times over the sidewalk. Tom McLouth, Walworth Postmaster, when asked about the \neighborhood delivery and collection box unit\ said there was no question the box would be moved. \There is definitely a safety prqblem with the kids and I will see to it that the box is moved at Post Office expense,\ he said. 'I'll contact the homes across the street and if no one has a big objection, move it over there,\ he added. Many people were concerned that they presently had stone driveways. What \effect\ would putting a paved driveway in after the sidewalk have on them? Would they be able to tear up the sidewalk to put in a smooth driveway? How would 'the stone driveways be finished off for the time being? What about liability and upkeep? he Gananda Times asked Walworth building inspector and town assessor John Aman these questions. \I don't seeany problem. Residents can have their contractors cut out that section of the sidewalk and blend their driveways into it. The contractor (Monroe Roadways) will also feather both sides of the sidewalk with a crushed stohe dust where there are driveways,\ ex- plai, ned John. Town attorney, Paul Rubery, said that the sidewalks are located in the town's right-of-way so that repair and liability would be the responsibility of the town: Paul Carini, owner of Monroe Roadways, assured the Gananda Times that screened topsoil and seeding would be placed over areas needing repair. All work should be completed by next week. \We'll do our best to make every- body happy,\ he said. Rick Struzzi, representing the Gkanda Development Partnership, Continued on page 6 . . . P.O.
