GANANDA TIMES - PAGE 4 Pig on Leash Turns Heads in Walworth Meet the Rieck Family of 1485 -Penfield Road in Walworth. There's Mom and Dad': Chip and Lorraine, children: Char, Allison and Catherine, and two-month old Georgia May, their pet P-I-G. This adorable new addition is causing quite a stir around town and especially at Char's soccer games which she attends on her leash. As housepets go, Georgia May (she was christened after the place and month of her birth) is a challenge. She is actually well-behaved' and \easier in , some ways than a puppy or a kitty,\ said = Lorraine, but she needs to be kept in a - playpen (is that a pig-pen?) in' the house to control her exploring nature. Al- e though Georgia May is particularly fond of such delicacies as corn-on-the- cob, her main diet is Purina Hi-Protein Pig Chow. Even in the rucal neighbdr- hood, Pig Chow is scarce and sometimes Dog Chow is substituted. Correct nutrition plays avery impor- tant role in controlling the pig's size however, as Georgia May's final growth could be between 35-85 lbs. \We're hoping for the 35 lbs. size!\ exclaims Lorraine. The Riecks keep their pet inside during inclemate weather to protect her very delicate skin. Because Georgia May is descended from the African miniature pig, \anything under 50 degrees can be dangerous for her,\ explains Chip. Her wild jungle background is probably also responsible for the \little spinning routine\ she does when frightened. Lorraine -figures it is a defense mech- anism to keep predators at bay. It certainly intimidates L.C., the family dog. How does a sane family come to adopt a pet pig? Allison, a fourth grader at Gananda Central, has wanted a pet pig since she heard a story in second grade about a pig who herded sheep. Last year, her grandmother read an article about pet pigs from a place called \Designer Pigs\ in Stopbridge, Georgia and offered to buy one. With a final OK from ~llison's parents, the miniature pig was winging its way to Rochester and her new family. Well, almost ... A little adventure arrived with Georgia May. The,night she was due in Rochester by plank, Georgia was let off in Syracuse by mistake. Lorraine and ha- children piled into their family car at 2:00 a.m. and went to rescue their little one from a lonely overnight stay at the Syracuse airport. . And that's the story of how \this little piggy went home.\ \You want eggs and WHA T for breakfast?\ The Reick family: (Back-R o w - left to right) Chip and Char, (Front Row) Allison, ' Lorraine with baby Georgia May, and Catherine.
