Haas Lounge rally is greeted by feeble audience response Palestine liberation Guerilla seeks peace jy Dennis Drescher Spectrum Staff Writer Describing his people as being “pushed since the tragedy of 1948, and finally being pushed into concentration camps known as refugee camps,” Mr. Shara added that the Palestinaina Resistance Movement is the only way his people can achieve self-determination. They must, “actively engage in fighting their oppressor.” by Hal Hellwig Spectrum Staff Writer In an atmosphere bristling with severely conflicting views, Abu Shara, „a Palestinian Guerilla, spoke Wednesday in the Fillmore Room about the Palestinian Resistance Movement. Mr. Shara explained that the group’s purpose is ‘To liberate the land of Palestine.” What must be established is a “Socialist- Democratic state in Palestine” under which the Israelis presently living there can live together with the Arab people, “the original inhabitants of the land.” The strike rally in Haas Lounge Wednesday, colorfully announced in the handouts by the Student Association Fall Mobilization Committee, was greeted by feeble responses on the part of the audience. The fever pitch present last semester was just not there. At times the speakers were calling for students to unify into a collective coherent group; to fight against war, fascism, sexism and to foster revolution. But the audience remained passive. It seemed true with the quiet that reigned when Fred Snell, Master of College A, said; “I see apathy. Instilled, active apathy. You’re afraid, you hide in your rooms.” Dr. Snell explained the fear and apathy as he said; ‘The right is going to come down heavy,” considering the various movements of the political right that are moving to half campus unrest. He asked: “Why are they over-reacting? Because they’re afraid. Their institutions are weak.” Advances toward this goal include a people’s militia. Rather than each man becoming a fighter, each must conduct his everyday life but must take on the responsibility of the defenses of his area. Groups of five or seven, giving political and military training, must be ready to protect such things as factories and other important buildings. The militia was described as, “the spearhead of the defense of the Palestinian Resistance Movement.” Since the people of Palestine are dispersed, Mr. Shara feels that the guerillas can be found all over the country. Their main strength, he said are Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and the underground movement in the occupied territories. The Movement gained a large portion of its support after the war in 1967, when the Arab regimes surrounding Israel had been defeated. When asked about the manpower supporting the guerilla movement, Mr. Shara declined to give actual numbers. “1 am not at liberty to divulge such things, supposing that I do know them.” Mr. Shara described the recent hijackings of Israeli passenger jets as “a declaration to the world that big powers or no big powers, nobody is going to dictate the fate of the people of Palestine anymore. The struggle goes on, and the world must recognize us as more than a bunch of refugees,” Although speakers urged students to get out and do great things, Wednesday's Haas Lounge 'rally' never seemed to get off the ground. —'Trent o Lead ballon “Our basic achievement,” said Mr. Shara, “is what the bourgeois press calls the first Arab Soviet. We call it the People’s Councils. They are very small cultures, based on the concept that people in each area will elect their own administrators, and coordinate their efforts with the total city or government. Under these councils, people are coming out from under 20 years of dictatorship to make political decisions and to stand up to the responsibilities of making these decisions.” Elaine Kolb, a member of the Venceremos Brigade, spoke of her experiences in Cuba this summer. She said: “We spent a week with Vietnamese students.” on trial for their lives. We can’t go to Canada, because it’s a fascist state.” Calling for solidarity with the Black Panthers, the Front de Liberation Quebecois (FLQ), “our black and brown brothers,” the Vietnamese people and “our Palestinian brothers,” she urged that “we better be ready to move when fascism starts here. We have to start feeling in common.” Visibly moved, she related how a Vietnamese woman had compassion for her when she accidently cut her forehead. She continued: “They have a faith in the American people, because their enemy is our enemy too. “Women are getting together; they’re a really important life force in dur movement,” she maintained,'' Miss Kolb also attacked male chauvinism, expounding upon the rise of women in an oppressive society. ‘We’re getting screwed’ He quietly asked the students to “get out into the community” and “show them what’s wrong,” implying that “suppression of dissent” would be eased if the community understood. He cautioned students; “People are getting screwed; be careful what you do. Tell them like it is, in a language they understand. Don’t be discouraged.” Action is essential Mr. Shara emphasized the need for action in order for the Movement to succeed. “The Palestinian Resistance has proved that whatever it says, it is going to dictate in action. When our people take their fate into their hands, no forces of dictatorship can finally dictate their fate. They will master their fate. Their action is augmented by their own arms. Rally bombs “The hijackings attained the attention of the world. They showed the world that our people are not looking for the type of peace we would have under Israel’s tutelage.” When asked for his feelings concerning the upcoming national moratorium, Mr. Shara was quick to express an attitude of support. Although he stressed that each movement must formulate a method that is successful for its particular environment, he stated that the Palestinian Movement supports the moratorium, just as they support all revolutionary movements. There was a call for a demonstration at the fountain area of Norton Hall after the rally, but most of the 200 to 300 people present were more concerned with leaving the congested hallway. Revolution: the only life “The Palestinian Movement is fighting for the right of self-determination throughout the whole of Palestine. It has asserted its unity to carry on the struggle against the Israeli oppressors as well as the Arab reactionary regimes. The Palestinian Resistance Movements emerged as the political force in the Middle East. Liberation for our people, as well as for the Israelis, will not come about merely by succumbing to the pressures of imperialism, but rather by fighting imperialism head to-head until its downfall.” On revolution, she said: ‘The only way we can be human, is to become a revolutionary. The only life is that of revolution.” At one point, there were perhaps 100 in the fountain area, although only about 50 were directly concerned with the demonstration. The chanting was feeble and sporadic, but shouts of “power to the People” and “Free the Panther 21” were heard. An unidentified speaker called for unification of effort, as she said that “the student movement has fallen apart. At Kent State, they’re indicting those students they didn’t kill. Various banners proclaimed that we should “Support the Mid-East Liberation, Free all Political Prisoners and Free the Panther 21,” as a coherent group of maybe 30-50 people marched around the fountain area and over the back steps of Norton Hall. It was discovered a few minutes before the meeting that members of the UB Vets Club would act as a sort of “security force” at the meeting. Although Mr. Shara stated in an interview prior to his speech that he knew nothing about them and felt they were not necessary, one of the two men with him during the interview said, “There might be trouble If somebody did arrange for them, it was one of the other Subscription rales arc Sd.SO per semester or $8.00 for two semesters.
