Wimbledon tennis Summer softball schedule set with a new playoff system Australians whip I Three Australian-American battles were the main attractions of Friday’s Wimbledon Tennis Championships. As in the past, the Australians always seem to dominate the Americans in the grueling sport of tennis. The winners of Friday’s matches were John Newcombe, Tony Roche and Ken Rose wall. The losers, each of whom if luck had turned their way might have won, were Dennis Ralston from Bakersfield, Calif., Tom Gorman from Seattle and Marty Riessen from Evanston, III. the New York Mets won the 1969 World Series. The players and team names were the same, but the play-off system different as the 1970 State University of Buffalo Summer Softball League began play last week. Twelve teams of faculty, staff and students are competing this year, six less than last year. Four teams, including last year’s champions, have transferred to other local leagues. A new play-off system had to be devised since there is only one league this year. Last year the top two teams in each league played for the title. This year, however, all teams will participate in a single elimination tournament. While Laver’s hopes for a third straight Wimbledon title failed, so did U.S. hopes for a men’s title. Arthur Ashe was defeated by Andres Gimeno of Spain 7-5, 7-5 and 6-2. Ron Smith, the number one seeded from Los Angeles, lost to Roy Emerson 2-6, 6-2,6-4 and 6-2. However, Graebner, seeded ninth, remained alive by defeating Hie Nastase of Romania 6-3, 6-0, 4-6 and 6-3. As for Laver’s defeat, he offered no excuses for his downfall after 10 years of being on top of the tennis world. “1 just didn’t play well,” said the 31-year-old professional from Australia. Laver, who won here in 1961 and 1962 as an amateur, and as a pro in 1968-1969, suffered from such strange (for him) lapses as double faults and netted forehands. With only Graebner placiiijf in the last eight, 1970 has the worst year for the U.S, since the 1967 matches when this country didn’t place a single man in the quarter finals. Graebner will meet Roger Taylor in the quarter finals, along with Roche and Rosewall, and Roy Emerson and John Newcombe against each other. In another match, Bob Carmichael, who is also an Australian, will face Gimeno of Spain. In the last 16 women’s single, however, the UJS. placed Mrs. Billie Jean King, Rosemary Casals and Cecilia Martinez in the quarter-finals. Newcombe, last year’s beaten finalist, started the Australians on their way to victory with a 14-12, 9-7 and 6-2 rout over Dennis Ralston on the center court. At the same time Tony Roche, the fourth seed, was pulling out a victory over Riessen 6-4,8-10,6-4 and 6-2 on the number one court. Then in the final, which many fans insisted was the best of the day, Ken Rosewall, a veteran of the game, defeated th unseeded Tom Gorman, 6-2, 6-2, 3-6 and 7-5. Spectators invited The top four teams will wait for the second found to begin, while the other teams battle each other. In other words, a team finishing in last place with a 0-11 record could possibly win the post-season trophy. The schedule, including play-off games, will extend until mid-August. Games will be played Monday through Thursday on the Clark Gym Field, starting at 4:30 p.m., with Fridays as rain dates. Spectators are invited. However, Friday was not a complete failure for the Americans, dark Graebner of New York defeated the number one Indian Prenjit Lall, 6-0, 6-2 and 6-1. A few surprises In Saturday’s action, a husky Englishman by the name of Roger Taylor, upset the record books by defeating Rod Laver of Australia 4-6,6-4, 6-2 and 6-1 in one of the biggest upsets of the decade since CLASSIFIED FOR SALE FEMALE $40 per month — 5 min. Gerry Gergley, Buffalo’s successful wrestling coach of four years, has announced plans to accept the head coaching job at Florida Technological Institute.
