The S PECT^UM J VoL 21, No. 2 State University of New York at Buffalo Friday, Juna 19,1970 Executive committee assumes Collegiate Assembly direction by Laurie Hams Spectrum Staff Writer Warren Bennis, vice president for Academic Affairs, informed the group early in its three-hour meeting that the nomination of Fred Snell had not been accepted by Acting President Peter Regan outlining three major reasons for the decision: The Collegiate Assembly Wednesday shelved the nomination of Fred Snell as its director until October 1. A five man executive committee will serve in the interim over the summer months and into the beginning of the next school year. The five man committee will be comprised of not less than two faculty and two student members, all five of whom will be chosen at the next meeting of the Assembly. This action tabled last Wednesday’s nomination of Snell. Snell had been chosen on a controversial vote of 9-8-1 in which many of the voting members had not been correctly delegated. First, Following some of the past meetings of the Assembly in the past, Bennis had received “letters and communications” about Snell. Not best choice Secondly, It was “felt by a number of groups that Fred Snell would not be either the best or a good advocate of the College System.” This included several of the vice presidents, Acting President Regan and some members of the Faculty Senate and Bennis. The chairman of both the executive council meetings and those of the Collegiate Assembly was not designated. Two motions were tabled which propose methods for selecting the chairman, or president, as the assembly wishes him to be delegated. The first, made by Dr. Benjamin Townsend of the Modern College and proposer of the executive committee, is that the executive council shall choose from among themselves who shall preside over both groups’ meetings. A motion by Janet Cohen, representative of the Student Association suggested the presidor be rotated among the five members of the executive committee. It was also felt, according to Bennis, that Snell’s “Point of view was not diverse enough” to adequately represent the group. William Greiner, chairman of the Law and Society Workshop explained he did not believe a 9-8-1 vote was conducive to the cohesion necessary to keep the Assembly alive. He added the most important issue was to “move toward some consensus to hold the body together.” However Tom Buchanan, graduate student in political science, pointed out that Regan was a lame duck because of his scheduled departure from the University August 31. Buchanan suggested the Assembly choose a director, work with him through the summer without submitting the name to Regan and then in the fall submit the name to the new president who “will be a totally new and different personality.” Heated discussion The decision to create the five man executive council followed heated discussion over the question of accepting Fred Snell as the group’s chosen director of last week. Trustee approval pending It was decided however to approve the five member executive council since it was widely felt that an immediate continuation of Snell’s nomination could possibly jeopardize the approval of the Collegiate System by the Board of Trustees next Wednesday. According to the Stem Prospectus the Collegiate Assembly was to have developed a slate of names to be presented to Acting President Regan. He in turn would review those on the list and choose one which would be acceptable to him and then return this name to the Assembly for final approval. If this person ultimately did not meet with the Collegiate Assembly’s approval, the process was to have begun again. However the Assembly chose to vote for Snell as its director without first submitting a slate of candidates. Vica-Pratident for Academic Development, Warren G. Bennie, Bennis pensi ve p° nde ? 1 a * Assembly meeting. Bennis earlier outlined reasons why Snell's nomination was unacceptable. The basic duties of the executive council will be to communicate between the president, University community and the Assembly without the stigma of an individual director. yM * ;? :^ Hunt to be canned The Executive Committee of the State University of Buffalo chapter of the American Association of University Professors has filed a charge of misconduct against Robert Hunt, director of Campus Security. The grievance, placed through the Faculty Senate in accordance with its by-laws, stems from Mr. Hunt’s actions at graduate exercises on May 29. L . u m The AAUP Executive Committee cited the arrest of four students and the threatened arrests of two faculty members and a graduate student as disruptive to academic freedom, in explaining why the charge was made. Since the grievance was filed, an additional faculty “ir’\ member, Luigi Bianchi, has been arrested for falsely reporting an incident and disorderly conduct, on a pus Security Force, acting on Mr. Hunt’s orders. Dr. Marvin Feldman, AAUP president, stated that this matter would be added to the current charges. The AAUP’s Executive Committee maintains that the two faculty members, who were attempting to sell Hayes 45 buttons, in no way disrupted the commencement exercises. Since the arrests of the four students on May 29, there has been considerable criticism of Mr. Hunt with many students, faculty and administrators privately demanding that Mr. Hunt be fired. In addition, it has been learned that the president’s office was granted authorization Monday to use funds from the supplementary budget to hire new supervisory personnel for the campus security force. These additional personnel will include a new director of campus security. -/!>_ College A matter Fred Snell, speaking at Collegiate Snell S nomination Shelved Assembly on Wednseday.
