Film commentary Vietnam Moratorium planned to expand until the war ends No easyfreedom Easy Rider is not an easy movie to watch, especially for those of us who, while aware of the myriad evils of America, have not been personally injured by them. Easy Rider forces one to feel, to react, and maybe, after the initial numbness has worn off, to think. money, Captain America and Billy think they have all tfie necessary ingredients for an easy, free life. But freedom is not the same as non-commitment. It involves, among other things, the ability to extricate one’s self from the subtle, and, at times dangerous nets society throws over people and calls “freedom.” Such as easy money. Or drugs. Or even - WASHINGTON - (CPS) - Nearly 300 student body presidents and editors have now signed call for a Vietnam Moratorium - a nationwide anti-war class and work boycott. Organizers of the Moratorium include: David Hawic, a former National Student Association staff member and coordinator of a “We Won’t Go” statement campaign involving 250 student body presidents and editors last year. Sam Brown, another former NSA staff member and organizer of youth for Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 presidential campaign He is currently a fellow at Harvaid l s Institute of Politics. David Mixner, another former McCarthy campaigner presently on the to its class boycotts as strikes because it does not feel the analogy applies. The intention is not to cripple the universities, but to use them as a base to end the war. Brown says. “Vietnam Moratorium Committee,” is for a one-day boycott of classes at all U.S. colleges and universities on Oct. 15 to call attention to and move toward ending the Vietnam War. So much for the plot. Our interest is not strongly drawn to the characters either. Dennis Hopper portrays Billy, a hippie happy-go-lucky buck skinned and mustachioed fnendly freak, while Peter Fonda as Captain America is your basic strong and silent character — a sort of psychedelic Gary Cooper. Neither of the two is of tragic proportions. But their illusion that money equals freedom is a variation on the tragic American syndrome of equating the possession of money with anything and everything life has to offer, including life itself. The very title of the movie points to this — easy rider is a slang term for a man who lives off of his mistress. With their easy America’s problem, they are also part of the answer, for they are representatives of a generation, our generation. A generation which, for one reason or another, has aroused the wraith of fear in America and its attendant demons. UNUSUAL WEDDING mm Iflw BANDS Made Own Shop The new Mobilization Committee Against the War in Vietnam has planned a national rally in Washington November 15 to coincide with the second month’s Moratorium days. The rally, similar to the march on the Pentagon in 1966, will include a march from Arlington Cemetery past the White House to the Capitol building, according to tentative plans. Both militant and n o t-so-militant groups are supporting the Washington rally, while some militant groups (including some SDS chapters) refuse to support the Moratorium. The Moratorium action is too moderate, some are saying. No violence A central office in Washington is coordinating plans for the demonstrations and projects to take place on the Moratorium days. Among the committee's suggested plans for the first demonstration and boycott day are town meetings, debates, rallies, leaflet distribution, study groups, vigils in homes and churches, anti-war films, petitions, teach-ins and memorial services for war dead. Violence is out of the question, say the organizers. The committee refuses to refer This wraith extends across all of America, but is especially strong in the South. It is here, after a few bright moments spent in the stark, aching beauty of the Southwest, and later on at a commune, (whose people work for their freedom with a will), that the tragedy of Easy Rider and ultimately of America, comes to a climax. But a climax which is only one of the many echoing across this nation, in various apocalyptic forms. £rik JeweleRS 81 ALLEN STREET BUFFALO, N.V. 886-6900 Taube Henry Zz Ce i°y f fStiUeit. wMwme MWa, Nn Tarii fottwiNfeforOi Witt's MW NOW JnNirr htf it AM, -1 ml — ttJ-tSSI nun (Holden Dragon Cum Fu Karate Master Ting Fong Wong NH«iy MML-frL 7.9:30 p.m 1396 Hertel 877-1156 Sni AT SATHEW'S •DuPont ios- iredoewti Page eleven .
