STUD E N T COUNCILS O n By Marchette In selecting a list of the best films of last year, we ran into some interesting problems. We found at least five of our choices ju s t going into general release. Next, we had to stretch our “Ten Best” to include twelve films. As if this weren’t inclusive enough, we de cided to add a supplem entary list of films th a t could not be ignored. To get to the business a t hand, the liest Film s of 1955, in order of preference: Picnic — The year’s top achieve ment, this superb film version of William Inge’s play should rank among the best ever made. W illiam Holden, Kim Novak and Rosalind Russell head the superlative cast. (Columbia) East of Eden — Elia Kazan’s radical, exciting improvement on Steinbeck’s novel, gave us the bril liant Jam e s Dean in the year’s most memorable performance. J u lie H a rris and Jo Van Fleet were notable, too. (W a rner Bros.) M a rty — Everybody’s favorite film, the homely story of a dark, homely guy and the plain Jane who brings light into his life, p erform ed beautifully by E rnest Borgnine, Betsy Blair, Joe Mantell. (United A rtists) The Rose Tattoo — Anna Mag- nani, possibly the Duse of our day, hamming and hawing m agni ficently as Tennessee W illiams’ overwrought Serafina, grandly assisted by B u rt Lancaster. (Hal W allis; Param o u n t) I A m a Camera — Julie H a r r is ’ wonderfully uninhibited perform ance as Christopher Isherwood’s amoral heroine, gave this unusual film sparkle and distinction. Lau rence Harvey was fine as her psy chosomatic roommate. (DCA) Guys and Dolls — The year’s best musical, a dandy film tran s lation of the Broadway classic with Marlon Brando, F rank Sinatra, (Continued on Page 6) (Mte 9Uxi, ^ Efujumt P Tour test move m cnaRe o e x t. . . la to cbeck the outstanding opportunitieB • very par^ dcular engineering senior Is sure to find at Cbe Radio Corporation at America world leader in electronics. an RCA engmeering management represen tative vill be oo eampue— THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1956 0M four ptecemenl officer oov tar yoo •ppointment.
