C O M VOLUME VIMSSUE XII I APRIL 22, 2009 President reflects on five years in office S T A F F W R I T E R J U L I E M A R I U Z St. John Fisher College has seen many generations pass through its halls, and with them, many changes. Through the halls of Kearney hang pictures of students, some in color bat most in black and white. Donald Bain has been at St. John Fisher for 34 years, longer than most of the faculty, and is reaching the end of his fifth year as president of the College. Bain was named interim president after the death of Katherine Keough in fail 2004 and was sworn into office in April 2006. \It has been a privilege to serve the students, faculty and staff o f St. John Fisher College throughout this period of time,\ Bain said. His time spent at Fisher has left him witness to the various changes, both positive and negative, but most impor tantly to the development and growth of students, faculty, staff and the Fisher campus as a whole. The development of faculty has been advantageous to Fisher students who are given the opportunity to learn from and work closely with professors. \Fisher has benefited me by provid ing me with excellent professors in my field, biology,” sophomore Christina - Regelsberger said. \These professors have enriched my Fisher experience by challenging me in new ways and sharing their passion for thetrspecific areas o f biology. I find myself truly en joying my major classes because I am being encouraged to learn. Because of the small student to teacher ratio, I find myself better able to connect with professors, which has improved my learning and understanding o f the subject.\ Likewise, sophomore Matt Lu kasiewicz said, \Fisher academically is equipping me with the tools to suc ceed in the business world, along with providing avenues for gaining experi ence such as clubs, internships and career workshops.\ Even students who have been at Fisher a short while have seen the valuable changes in both architec ture and academics. The additions of the Health and Humanities minor as well as the growing Statistics maj or are both new academic developments for undergraduates. The physical changes that have been most notable have been the addition of the Wegmans schools ofpharmacyandnursingaswell as the Welcome Center near the commuter parking lot. \We have constructed several new Continued on Page 9 INSIDE THIS ISSUE S t u d e n t l o a n p r o c e s s c h a n g e s ASSISTANT NEWS EDITOR MIGAN NEWELL The availability of student loans through SL. Program (FFELP), but will come directly from the Department of Education, \We are going to become a Direct Loan school. For us and our custom ers it is a simplified process,\ said Angela Monnat, director of Financial Aid at Fisher. “We evaluated both pro grams, whether to stay or change, and we think it's in the best interest of ttre students, parents and the college t o switch.\ \During the past year, many lend ers stopped participating in the fed eral student loan program,” Monnat said. When this happens students arre forced to choose new lenders, which can get complicated. \Students will be able to b crrowtbe same amount of student loan as they did under the FFELP program. The Di rect Loan Program is a simplified de livery system which will shorten loan processing time,\ Monnat said. \This will provide a lot more stability in the availability o f student loans.\ Financial aid packages are sent out after Spring2009 grades are submitted. The economy should not he affecting the amount of financial aid students receive. \As long as students file their FAFSA on time, we're going to renew their aid. If they have an academic scholarship and need to maintain a certain GPA that hasn't changed, so really the fi nancial aid will be renewed just like it has in the past,\ Monnat said. \One thing I do want to stress is that we know that these are really tough economic times for a lot of our families. We're very sensitive to that,” Monnat said. \So if there has been a significant change in a student’s fi nancial circumstances, loss of a job or Continued on Page 17 S T A F F W R I T E R K E L L Y O G I B A Less than eight months is all students get in a year at St. John Fisher Col lege, Butwhiata difference eight months can make. This time can alter one’s opinions, change a relationship with a friend forever, define a sports season, declare champions, bring let downs, make a person stronger, give a person their best memories and ultimately make one eight months older. And wliat has the campus community learned? That parking will forever be the w orst problem Fisher will ever face? Hopefully something more. C flanges i n student services After die departure of the popular Bon Appetit following the 2007-08 year, Lackmann arrived on to the campus with the goal of catering to the students needs, it» both variety and nutrition. Although the company saw a switch in general managers in mid-year, from Jim Bingham to Andrea Macarcne, Lack mann has made noticeable physical changes. The cereal bar included more selectioa fromTrixto Raisin Bran Crunch, along with the salad bar where one can find Mediterranean couscous to Cajun chicken salad. Nutritional facts have been added to selected items, helping provide stru- S t u d e n t s r e f l e c t o n s c h o o l y e a r dents with suggestions for a healthy meal. The company offered more of a menu selection to the Cyber Cafe and revamped the Murphy Dining Hall, Senior Eteannette McLaughlin thinks they have done a wonderful job re sponding to student suggestions. \It is also really nice having the fishbowl back in Michael House. Students can come, hang out, eat and watch TV,” McLaughlin stated. “It is clear Lack mann has been making strides for improvement and they're doing a great job! Especially since Larry is the coolest.\ Maccarone has taken suggestions seriously. “There is always room for improvement in any situation. As we build rela tionships with students, faculty and staff, we get to know likes and dislikes,” Maccarone states. \I would like to see continuous growth of services and par ticipation with the college culture.\ The Student Government Association decided to get rid of the shuttle bus that used to transport students to and from popular Rochester locations, de claring that it was not popular or satisfying the students needs. In its place SGA teamed up with the RTS Bus service, where one dollar tickets could be picked up from the bookstore. Safety and security Some students question if having pick up sites on campus was the best idea for Fisher, This doubt came about when robbery and break-ins started occur ring frequently on campus and in the parking lots. Junior Jeff Same felt like questioning his safety on campus when his own Mac lab top was stolen from his room in Keough this past September, “For the most part I think the campus is really safe, it’s just stuff like this that makes me second guess it sometimes,” Same stated. The robber, a non Fish er Student, was caught and police action was taken. Continued on Page 7 VIEWPOINT NEWS LIFESTYLES CALENDAR Pit!?'; 10 2 E SPORTS
