Dr. Robert T, Redden, Dean for Instruction and Academic A d visement, vies with incumbent George Scondras for the Repub lican nomination for mayor of the Village of Geneseo at a party caucus to be held tomorrow, February 9. Dean Redden, a four year member of the Village Board and a resident of Geneseo for the past 12 years, spoke before Professor Jeff James' American Politics class this past Monday, February 4. In his talk, he cited Geneseo’s most serious problem as being how to finance the things that need to be done in order to make the village a more “pleasant and habitable place to live in.” Both the major and the village board have a “housekeeping” r e s p o n s i bility to keep the community running on an efficient level. After a brief opening by Redden on Geneseo's present state of affairs, the floor was opened up for a question and answer session. When asked if the position he held at the College in conjunction with the possibility of his being mayor would constitute a conflict o f in terests, Redden said no, pointing out the fact that his four years on the village board in combination with his job at the College never presented any serious conflict and that therefore he did not anticipate any such trouble should he become mayor. Dean Redden admitted that he was the underdog in the two man co n t e s t for the R e p u b l i c a n nomination, and that Mayor Scondras was a better known public figure, having operated his own store on Main Street in the village for many years now. He faulted the major for a lack of long-term planning and not being able to “get things done.” For the past four years of Scondras’ term of office, too much of what had been done was merely “reaction instead of action.” He stressed the need for a more careful bud geting of resources, and expres sed his desire to see a closer cooperation between the gov ernments of both the town and village of Geneseo. When asked why he though nimself qualified for the position of mayor, Redden pointed to his experience on the village board and added that his job with the col lege necessitates that he be an efficient a d ministrator capable of accom p lishing that which must be done. W h e n queried on whether or not he e n c o u r a g e s c o l l e g e students here to register and vote in the village’s upcom ing elec tions, Wr. Redden replied no, that most college students at Gene seo were not permanent resi dents, a.nd that their transient status did not necessarily indi cate that they would have the same in terests in the village as its residents. “What stake do you (students) have in the political life of this com m u n i t y ? ” he asked. Com m e n t ing on the quality of relations between Geneseo and the state go v e r n m e n t , Dean Redden said that they were “not e n o u g h a n d could aptly be de scribed as a case of “we run our shop, they run theirs.\ To the state government he said, Gene seo is like “hundreds of other small com m u n ities.” Legal Advice Given Free (Photo by Vic Cherubini) In a continuing effort to supply Geneseo students with free legal advice, the Student Association Legal Advice Service is again in operation.
