The 31-year resi- dent of Blue Point has devoted much of his life to the betterment of his community. He and his wife of 40 years, Joan raised their three sons, - Joseph, John Paul, and James here. John and Joan have expressed often over the years that moving to Blue Point was, without a doubt, a great decision. We in the Chamber of Commerce and the greater com- munity will be forever grateful for that decision made so long ago! John moved to Blue Point in 1981 and shortly after opened the Great Southern Deli at the site of what is now The Fish Store. As an early member of the Chamber of Commerce, John and his partner quickly became involved in our community, often hosting high school fundraisers in their parking lot. One event stands out; helping the Bayport Postmaster Stanley Orenkewicz raise money for the son of a letter carrier who was suffering from Crohn’s Disease. The deli donated food to local residents in the wake of Hurricane Glo- ria and offered help doing whatever they could. With three young sons, John did what so many other local dads and moms did by getting involved with Bayport Blue Point Little League and Baymen Soccer. He coached a soccer team when the fedgling organization played on the grounds of James Great Parade Day There is no getting around it. Every year thousands of our friends and neighbors are joined by thousands of people from neighboring towns and they decend on our quiet bit of heaven for an annual event that wel- comes spring and pushes cabin fever and winter blues into memory. From Snedor Ave to the Blue Point Bridge, a sea of green will roll over Montauk Highway on Sunday March 16. Green trucks, green people, green bands, green dogs and cutest of all, green babies. Marching in the parade this year will be 70 or so groups, decked out in their Irish fnery and bringing entertainment to all those people lined up. I’ve been doing the parade for 23 years now and when I drive throught the streets in the days before there are sign that the day is coming. Cones and wooden barricades on the side of the road; cars parked in strategic spots along the route, green shamrocks in windows and cars all “Irished up” The morning of the parade the buzz comes from the clatter of Skip Pope and his merry band putting up the silver barriers around the corner of Blue Point Ave and Montauk, patrol cars starting to set up the barricades Two Great Golf Outings for this year See Page 38 and 39 Wild Atlantic Way Page 28
