One of their biggest accomplishments to date is the upcoming fourth grade feld trip. Students from all three elementary schools will be going in the spring to Bethpage Restoration Village. BBP SEED worked all year to get a feld trip back for the district, meeting with teachers and administrators to make sure the trip was curriculum based, and coor- dinated with current learning. “It gives the children something to look forward to. It is something that is memo - rable within the educational experience.” said Bob Draffn, SEED Chairperson. “We would like to do more feld trips and eventually we would love to have a feld trip for every grade.” Other things BBP SEED did this past year were to award their frst scholarship to a graduating senior and they were very excited to receive their 501 (c) (3) status. This educational foundation helped to A Screen, Some Hooks and a Shark What do these three things have to do with each other? By Danielle Golden Giglio Well, the Hooks family of Bayport created an invention to fx torn screens and it was recently featured on the show “Shark Tank”. Brian Hooks and his brilliant daughters Emma, 16 and Lily, 12 are the inventors of ScreenMend, which is a patch for screens that is coated with wax and applied to the rip with the heat of a hair dryer. And as the Sharks found out – there is nothing else like this on the market. The idea of ScreenMend happened three years ago when the Hooks family was doing chores on their screened-in porch. Brian was trying to patch a hole in the screen that their bunny had chewed through. The tape screen patch kit just wasn’t working. At the same time Lily was trying to scrape wax off the table that had spilled over from a candle. Jokingly she said to her dad to “put some of this wax on the patch to make it stick” since she was frustrated trying to get it off the table. Lily said, “It was an aha moment and we tried it.” That frst wax screen patch ended up lasting through two years of attempted bunny escapes, rain, dust and Hurricane Irene. It fnally fell off during Hurricane Sandy. They knew A Story of Courage On Monday, September 30th, the Bayport-Blue Point Foundation held it’s 24th, yes, 24th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. This outing was somehow different however. Sure, the crowd was plentiful and joyous as usual. The beer was frosty and the fare at the Island Hills Country Club was better than ever. The sunshine...the music...the laughter all similar to the previous twenty-three outings. Borders Beyond Blue Point Ah Hah! Melissa... This years honoree wasn’t the typical outstand - ing citizen who gives tirelessly to his or her town, asking nothing in return. No, this years honoree was Melissa Fricke, a prominent mem- ber of one of Bayport-Blue Point’s fnest fami - lies who always thinks BIGGER. While most continued page 18
