The setting was Richlee Street and the “stars” were Kristin LoNigro and Julie Ocon. At approximately 5:00 P.M., as children played and Kristin and Julie were cleaning up from their joint, day-long garage sale, a cry filled the air. “Somebody help me”! “I wasn’t sure what I had just heard, continued on page 8 continued on page 8 Aerodrome Receives Historic Status Bob Draffin Five years ago the rumors started spreading around Bayport once again: there was a plan for a condo development on the sixty acres that is home to the Bayport Aerodrome. Thirty years earlier these same rumors abounded when the then Edwards Airport was sold. And once again, the people of Bayport have risen up to save their “Flying Jewel”. It started with neighbors stopping neighbors to discuss the latest that they had heard. Soon it pro- gressed into impromptu gatherings in local living rooms, and then culmi- nated with the realization that a Civic Association was needed to protect the quality of life we all enjoy in our Community, with a focus on preserving the Aerodrome. In Septem- ber of 2003, the Bayport Civic Association held an organizational meeting at the Bayport-Blue Point Library. Although we needed to create bylaws, hold elections and handle all the related obligations to start up our Association, the overriding concern that evening was to save the Aerodrome. Over 30 people gathered that night, several of them from the Bayport Aerodrome Society BCA's Joe Libertelli, Sue Lauper and Pres. Not a place you would conjure up when dreaming about far off lands and exciting adventures. Unless... Maybe you’re looking for something to do with yourself and your life. Unless maybe you are Melissa Fricke, Bayport- Blue Point graduate who studied Interna- tional Relations at Lehigh University and learned all about developmental problems in developing countries.
