Travel IT’S A GUY THING I have a confession to make. I like buying gifts for guys much better than for my wife. Whoa, before you jump to the wrong conclusion, let me put it another way: I love my wife more than anything, but it ’ s much easier and more fun to pick out birthday and Christmas presents for my sons, my dad, my brother and my close buddies. It ’ s a guy thing and it shows. Never was it more evident than on my best friend ’ s recent birthday. I had a ball picking out his gift and giving it to him. Not only was he celebrating a milestone birthday, he had just done my family a huge favor. So I wanted to get him something special. I spent the good part of a day buying his gift, which brought me as much pleasure as it eventually did him. I got him a new fishing rod and reel. A new tackle box. And here ’ s the topper – a bunch of neat stuff to fill it – snapper poppers, neon bobbers, sinkers, hooks and an assortment of very cool lures. They were the kind of thingamajigs and doohickeys he ’ d probably never use (who fishes for walleye on Long Island?) but that he would covet every time he opened his treasure chest. To a guy, it was the “ mother load ” – better than my wife receiving a diamond ring or a five new pair of shoes. And that was the problem. When I bestowed my gifts on my friend, my wife was sitting right by my side. With each tear of wrapping paper, she beamed as brightly as he did, which only made me feel guiltier. Did those 14-karat gold hoop earrings I bought her for her birthday make here feel the same? Did the sweater outfit and perfume I got her for Christmas? Or the negligees I bought her on Valentine ’ s Day? (Bad example, those were as much a gift for me as for her.) The truth is, I ’ m just not very good at picking out “ girl gifts ” , or at least, I don ’ t approach it with the same verve and excitement. I ’ m tentative, unsure and procrastinate until panic sets in. To make matters worse, my wife is just the opposite. She is the world ’ s best gift-giver when it comes to me. One Christmas, she got me neat binoculars and an underwater camera. Another, she gave me a new stereo with all the bells and whistles. And the pi è ce de r é sistance was the kayak she surprised me with on my birthday, complete with a little compartment to store beer. Geeze, it brought tears to my eyes! Now, with her birthday approaching again, my angst is growing again. What gift could possibly show my wife how much I love her? If I asked her, she ’ d probably tell me that saying “ I love you ” to her more often is the best gift of all. Yeah, sure, but how does that compare to a new bowling ball?
