46 Hobart Herald “Oh mother don’t talk that way. You’re good for many Easters yet.” Yet the memory of the grave-faced doctor s words haunted her mind. “She has failed steadily lately and I believe the anticipation of the Easter Service has been all that has kept her up as long as this. Be prepared for the end at anytime.” “Is my black silk dress and my bonnet all ready? You know the last time I wore it there was a seam ripped in the waist. Did John tell the boy to be here early to wheel me to church? I wanter have plenty of time to look at the flowers for there’ll be a sight of them I know. ” “Yes, mother, the dress is all fixed fine, and the boy will be here at half-past nine.” “Say, Alviny, I’m feelin’ real smart tonight. I believe it’s this spring weather ahelpin’ me. Hand me m y knitting off the shelf afore you set down.” Easter morning dawned warm and clear with a smell of life and growing things in the air. Long before the boy was due the old woman was in a flutter of excitement. “Alviny, do you s’posehe’ll forget? Young boys is so careless.” But he did not. Just as they were ready to start Alvina rushed out into the garden and returned with a single white crocus. “ I seen this from the window, mother, and I knew you was real fond of them, so I got it for you to wear. Let me pin it right here on your breast.” “Ain’t they late this year? Why I remember when I was a girl mother and me used to each have a big bunch of them to wear.” “ Yes, it does seem as if spring was backward this year.” The big church -was nearly’ empty when Alvina came up the aisle with her mother in the wheel chair. As it rattled over the stone tiles she felt glad they’ had come early’, but her mother was oblivious to such things.
