VOLUME CXXXIV II ISSUE III · FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2013 GENEVA, NY Transgender Student Ignites Debate with Petition I'M OUTSTANDING BECAUSE •.• HWS transgender students. By Andrew Coleburn '14 Herald Contributor As all stUdents, alums, faculty and administration know, Hobart and William Smith operate as a coordinate college system. While there are many advantages and disadvantages to such a system, things can get complicated in the case of transgendered students. These complications were recently brought into the spotlight when Drift Feernan, an female to male transgender student at Hobart, started a petition on Change.org to get the school to add his email to the official Hobart student email list. According to his petition, despite being a Hobart student, Feernan was \not allowed to be on the email list of Hobart College, despite being a Hobart student\ because of his status as transgender. This has kept Feernan from receiving ernails relevant to Hobart students such . as Hobart Student Government ernails, as well as ernails from other male-only organizations such as male' sports teams and the Hobartones-the all male a capella group--:to :p.arne a few. As he stated in his petition·, this \continues to negatively impact [Feernan's] life.\ The Herald spoke with Feernan and his friend Chris Konopacki -another transgender student-about the petition and the institutions response to the issue. \They knew already,\ Feernan said. \They knew they had these issues and the administration has been neglecting to push these issues. I'm not going to sugar coat it. They've known about these issues a heck of a lot longer than we've both been here because there were trans students before.\ Both Feernan and Konopacki fee like there is a general problem-not just at HWS, but in our greater society-and that people are not very educated in what it means to be transgender. \Imagine you wake up tomorrow and what's 'down there' is gone. The way everybody sees you would be different and you'd be like, 'No, it's me, I'm a guy, I'm a guy.' And they'd be like, no you're not, you're a woman. That's what it's like,\ Feernan said. \That's how I've felt my entire life,\ Konopacki added. Scrolling through the comments on Feernan's petition, it is obvious that this 'Transgender Debate' continued on page on 6 ...
