In the final this past Sunday, Serena faced Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka, who was trying to become the first woman since Martina Hingis to win the majors in Australia and New York in the same year. Despite trading breaks in the beginning of the first set, Serena eventually grabbed a hold of the set, taking it 7-5. Serving for the championship at 5-4 and then again at 6-5 in the second set, Serena was broken each ~ime, then lost the tiebreaker. After a By Colleen Moore '16 Sports and Health Editor long game in the third set, Williams broke Azarenka to go up 3-1, and then eventually won the match on an unforced error from Azarenka. By Nathan Nacheff '17 Herald Contributor · Photo Courtesy of bronocotalk.co,:n.- Autumn is upon us again, and what does that mean? Football. The National Football· League's regular season began this past week with a multitude of riveting matchups and MVP individual performances. Yes, it was merely the first of 16 games for every team, so it is impossible to put too much stock into a single performance · by anybody, including the timeless all-stars of the generation. However, there are certainly many aspects of particular teams and players that can be seen as both promising and concerning after week one. · The season opened upon Sept. 5 with a match-up between the defending champion Baltimore Ravens and the Super Bowl favorite Denver Broncos in Denver. The Broncos dominated the Ravens 49-27 behind Peyton Manning's career-high 7 touchdown ·passes. \[Peyton's] phenomenal. To continue to come out every year and put that kind of performance on for us, it's amazing,\ Broncos tight end Julius Thomas told the Associated Press. On the other side, the Ravens lost many of their best players this offseason, following their epic Super Bowl feat. In the loss on Sept. 5, they showed some signs of brilliance, Peyton Manning leading the Broncos to victory on Sept. s. but the absence. of guys like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Anquan Boldin was evident. The Broncos and Manning are contenders, and the entire league should be at their very best when going up against Denver. After The Broncos/Ravens -game, the rest of the league and its fans waited in eager anticipation for the day most associated with the NFL: Sunday. With Sunday, Sept. 8, came 13 games featuring26 different teams. The earliest games on Sunday started at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, while the latest game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants started at 8 p.m. It was football frenzy this past Sunday, with NFL broadcasts all afternoon and into the night. . This week's \Game of the Week,\ as chosen by many NFL experts, definitely lived up to the hype. Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers traveled west to the Bay Area to take on Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers in a game that went down to the wire. With the teams going back and forth, it seemed that it would take one · individual performance to put either team over the hump. That player was the 49ers' newly acquired wide receiver, Anquan Boldin, who had 13 catches for 208 yards and a touchdown. Both teams were ·great, but Boldin's receiving, combined with the accurate throwing arm of Colin Kaepernick propelled the 49ers to a 34-28 win. \He made plays that he shouldn't have made,\ said Kaepernick of Boldin, commenting on the supernatural essence· with which he played Sunday to the Associated Press. Conversely, the ·Packers played very well, but fell just short. One concern is the 49ers' defense and its inability to stop the pass .. . Sunday came to a close with a wiri for the Cowboys over the Giants by a score of 36-31. However, although the work week had begun, Monday night brought the co.untry two ·more games: Eagles-Redskins and· Texans-Chargers. Both games were great, with the Eagles and the Texans emerging victorious. Things that stood out on Monday were the return of Robert Griffin III to the Redskins after tearing his ,ACL, Chip Kelly's high-octane offense working to perfection for the Eagles, and the Texans' big comeback to beat the Chargers. ... 9 +
