6 THE HERALD, FRIDAY, MARCH 7,2008 A rts a n d E n tertain m e n t U U r U I t I s - By Zinnia Gill ‘10 Distribution Manager While cruising through the cyber waves ofGossipGirls.com, 1 started reading about an article recently published in Harper’s Bazaar about Demi Moore and her opinion o f aging. According to GossipGirls.com, \In the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Moore opens up abont life as an actress over 40 in an industry that puts so much emphasis on the beauty of youth. She says, \Look I would be lying if I said I don’t have moments of panic when I look in the mirror and see things creeping in that weren’t there before. But now 1 stop, and instead o f focusing on my flaws, 1 think about all that I have in my life.” I think that it is such a breath of fresh air that one of the most beautiful women is speaking out about loving the skin you’re in. It is a wonderful message Moore sends out to many young women all over the country, and even the world. For a woman who has the body of a twenty year old to speak out about her unwanted wrinkles is a bit inspiring. It’s always nice to hear a celebrity speaking out about an issue like they are a regular person just like the rest of us. We’ve all become so accustomed to reading meaningless gossip about celebrities that we don’t need to know. Does it matter if Ashlee Simpson was lip synching live at SNL? Maybe it’s embarrassing. Alright, it's entirely embarrassing. Wliat was she thinking? But my point is that it’s completely irrelevant to the inner workings of our lives. Fora middle aged woman to read an article like the aforementioned one. would be inspiring for their selfesteem. To hear that Demi Moore, living goddess, is realizing that age doesn’t matter and that your life experiences are what make you is entirely impacting. That’s the thing about celebs, they have the power to affect us, so why not do so positively? Way to go, Moore. . Because 1 feel that the title of this review is a rather impalpably poetic description of the film, 1 decided to say something more concrete. “Murder”, I said with a shrug. No Country For Old Men was hailed as a landmark film from its opening in the New York Film Festival through to the 80Ul Academy Awards when it was declared Best Picture of the Year. Critics and laymen alike praised the film, but a large grouping of the latter found little to appreciate. As a lilm enthusiast with major bearings in the mainstream sentiment, I can tell you exactly why: this film can easily be considered vacuous. In its empty Western landscapes, emotionlessly inhuman characters and silence-laden soundtrack of scrapes, shots, and scuffs this film is, in a sense, empty. It takes the artistically trained film enthusiast in me, however, to say that is what makes this film perfect in its own uncanny way. The film follows three men. Men’s men, it should be pul, whom share very little screen time with each other, but rather major thematic elements in a few of the central realms of the film. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell’s (Tommy Leejones) voiceover opens over the previously mentioned landscapes, speaking in brilliantly perfected Texan vernacular. The Coen Brothers’ have been perfecting this ever since their first film, Blood Simple, a middle class Texas thriller, and it shovys. The Sheriff speaks about violence, mean and brutal. Throughout the film, he speaks this way to nearly anyone who will approach him, but it never leaves the comfort of a non threatening setting such as a three-day-old crime scene or a diner where everyone knows his name. Despite his non-violent nature (he never wears a gun), the nonchalant cadence of his stories revolt, suggesting an almost inconceivable element of inhumanity in his soul. This brings us to Anton Sigur (Javier Bardem). Mr. Bardem’s performance, as you may have heard, will go down, and has gone down in history as one of the screen’s most disturbing figures. A black hole of emotion barely begins to describe the pit of emptiness this man represents. In his first breathtaking scene, a scuffling, strangling murder on the floor of a local precinct, his wide black eyes convey more than just a vacuum of humanity. Mr. Bardem’s unique ownership of this psychopath-fallen-from-heaven allows as much as a hypothesis of a man who can only truly breathe when he takes life from another. He goes on to hunt IJewellyn Gosh Brolin), who in his methodical opening scene portrays the essence of Southwestern masculinity, hunting more for necessity than sport and speaking only when spoken to. Before returning to the dead scene of a wild-west shootout he found hours before, his wife Carla-Jean (Kelly MacDonald) asks him what he’s doing. “I’m fixin’ to do somethin’ stupider than hell, but I’m gonna do it anyway”. Before leaving he tells Carla-Jean “If I’m not back tomorrow, tell my momma T love her”, “IJewellyn, your mothers dead”. He thinks for a moment before saying “Then 111 tell her myself”. Llewellyn leaves his Iraclor-trailer that night to launch himself into a deadly series of cat-and-mouse games with the forces of darkness. Don’t take this exit-line of crass bad-assery for cliche, butratherasahintofthesuperficial stupiditythese men possess. Clearly, they, are not social creatures, but they contain an impenetrable wisdom deeply embedded in them, dating back to their cavemen ancestors. Unlike the more common and shallow action heroes, Llewellyn and Sigur prepare, execute and follow up on every single one of their actions. This may spell boredom (and squeamishness) for some modern moviegoers, but the masterful crew of No Country For Old Men from the cinematographer, to the post-production editors, document all this painstakingly. This is what makes the film a historic piece of cinema, because every single motion, notion, and sound effect is crucial in making No Country the best picture of the year. Keep in mind that this film is far from humorless. All the ironies of the hazards of modern lawlessness are robustly intact Consistently held down by Sheriff Tom, who shines as one of the only competent men in the film, the law is a buckling, superfluous thing. It is as capricious as the taip that flies carelessly as it fails to cover a myriad of dead bodies on a pick-up truck. Finally, all the exchanges between Sigur and the humans h e meets along the way are, for lack of a better word, priceless. A nitpicker can easily find faults in this character, from his offensive representation as the origin-less Dark Other to his gimmicky coin toss, but every single scene his mass inhabits creates an inexplicable sense of magnetism. There is no doubt in my mind that No Country For Old Men deserves the 80lh iteration of the grand title it was awarded on Sunday, but in an Oscar season so overtly dominated by gravitas, business, murder, and vengeance distinctly owned by men, T couldn’t help but vote for Juno. Ask Dr. Blackwell Our Very Own HWS Sex Advice Columnist Dear Liz Blackwell, My boyfriend and I are very much in love and just can’t keep our hands off each other. We have been having sex at least once pretty much every day for the past five months and sometimes I just don’t think my body can keep up with my heart! With increasing frequency 1 have been experiencing excruciating pain upon insertion. What should I do? You’re a life saver! Allota Humping Dear Ms. Humping, There are two simple solutions to this very normal problem you are faced with. The first is abstinence. I know, I know, you’re in love and can’t help being overwhelmed by emotion but if you just exercised a little self control and cut back to maybe once every other day I think you would find that your vagina will be thanking you for the break. Your second option is to run over to Wegman’s and pick up some lubrication. It sounds like your problem is related to vaginal dryness. Your body produces a natural lubrication which is usually sufficient during intercourse, but given your activity level your body probably just can’t produce enough (and can you blame it?). If you have never used lube before it might seem a little kinky or strange but trust me, it makes insertion as smooth as butter. Sincerely, Liz Blackwell Got a question about sex that you need answered? Can’t ask anyone else? Don’t know yon got that STD from last weekend or what it is?
