Buffalo, NY College President nam ed Renaissance M an “He is a true renaissance man and exemplifies our foundation’s mission to build a better Buffalo.” By Katie Schlientz Editor h Chief Rev. V incent M. Cooke, S.J., the president of the College, was nam e d 2003 Renaissance Man by the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF) earlier in the month o f June. “We’re pleased to honor a pillar of the community like Father Cooke,” Jeffrey S. Vukelic, president of the BRF, said. “ H e is a true renaissance man and exemplifies our foundationis mission to build a better Buffalo.” Father Cooke has been president of the College since 1993 and, during that time period, has raised the bar for academic standards and fundraising. He has overseen nearly $90 million in capital im p rovem e n ts on the campus. The recent increase in freshman enrollment and move for Canisius to be ranked among top colleges nationally has also been directly attributed to Father Cooke. The Buffalo News also honored Father Cooke in 2001, naming him an Outstanding Citizen for that year. The News also recognized him as one of the two most inffuential civil leaders. Father Cooke was officially honored at the spring luncheon, hosted by BRF, June 10 at the Buffalo ConventionCenter.Proceeds collected from the benefit will go to the Niagara Falls Airbase Family Support Center and the Buffalo Zoo. Dennis F. Strigl, president and CEO of Verizon Wireless, delivered the keynote address. Strigl, a graduate o f Canisius, is nationally recognized as one of the most prominent architects of the wireless communication industry. Past recipients of the honor include Robert E. Rich, Sr., Burt Flickinger, Seymour H. Know III and Paul J. Koessler, as well as others. The BRF is a non-profit organization, dedicated to “Building a Better Buffalo.” Its mission is to foster a better quality of life in Buffalo and the Western New York region. The BRF is able to fulfill their mission through active support of public, educational, charitable and benevolent organizations and activities. The new e-board members will all be completing their senior year as they serve their term. The commencement exercises took place Saturday, May 17 in Alumni Arena at SUNY Buffalo’s north campus, where 675 degrees were conferred. H o n o rary degrees were also be bestow e d upon R a m o n E. Abarca, PhD, professor emeritus of h istory at Canisius and Scotty Bowman, c o n sultant, D etroit Red Wings. Jankow s k i is a C a n isius alum nus, class o f 55, who received a b achelor’s degree in English and w e n t on to attain his m a s ter’s in co m m u n icatio n a r ts from M ichigan State University. He was the president and chairm an of CBS Broadcasting G roup for 12 years, u n til, in 1989, he formed his own com p a n y , Jankow ski Com m unications Inc. Today, Jankow s k i is an advisor and m a n a g ing director of Veronis Suhler Stevenson, a leading in d e p e n d e n t m e rchant b a n k devoted to th e m e d ia, com m u n ications and inform ation industries. Jankow ski is a m e m b e r of the A m e rican Film In s t i t u t e ’s executive co m m ittee, the co author o f Reflections on Television, and is the chairman emeritus of the American Film Institute.
