Fast-Pace 64-65 NCCC Sport Program Planned; Wins Hinge On Frosh Turn-out at Trials Intercollegiate Basketball; Cross-Covitry, Feiciig, Golf, Ten lis Scheduled; Saseball Or 'Possibility' List NCCC students hit an athletic jack'pot this year as Coach Roy E. Sommer announced a sport program with \something for every- one.\.lncluded are both intercollegiate and intramural activities planned to fill the 1964-65 academic year. Participation is open to all ill-time students registered at NCCC. Topping the list of intercollegiate sports is a 23-game basket ball program. Wins in this field will depend to a great extent upon Freshmen turn-out during the trial periods, said Coach Som- mer, who expressed a strong desire to \build up the reserves.\ Added to the NCCC sports program this year are cross-country competition and fencing. While still in the planning stages, cross- country activity is expected to get off the ground in the near future. The NCCC fencing team, Coach Sommer said, has a strong four- man returning squad \which could be hard to beat.\ The present squad will be augmented by \at least\ ten Freshmen, he said. Intercollegiate matches, now being scheduled with \some pretty rough opponents,\ are expected to be announced early in October. Also scheduled on an inter- collegiate level is golf and ten- nis competition. Teams will be formed at an ap- propriate time, Coach Sommer promised. \Here too, we are dependent upon Freshmen participation for —----- ultimate success.\ Baseball, strongly advocated by students last year, may become a reality in 1965. COACH SOMMER Cheerleader Squad To Organize Soon Fun, games, and such - plus exercise galore! So promised Miss Patricia Merino, Faculty Advisor for the gal's cheerleader squad, who today issued a call for \seven new cheerleaders.\ An organizational meeting will be held at 2:15 P.M. Monday, September 28 in Room 103 M, she said. She noted tht the squad will consist of ten young ladies, \but\, she said, \I plan to use three members of the original squad, so I still need seven volunteers.\ So, if you are athletic - and a female - and want to cheer, you may be chosen. All NCCC gals are eligible. Oh yes, an attractive costume is provided - free. NCCCC Fencing Team Looks For Recruits Modern-day D'Artagnans, pre- ferable inexperienced, are want- ed to join the NCCC fencing team. Qualifications? Few! Just nim- ble footwork, a flexible wrist, and the ability to profit from instruc- tion. Try-outs for both NCCC men and women, Freshmen and Sopho- mores, has been scheduled for 2:15 P.M. Monday, September 28 in the Third Floor Student Lounge. Try-outs are open to all student. Weapons used consist of stand- ard tournament foils. Rules and fine points of competition will be explained at the meeting, Mon- day. Equipment used is provided by the NCCC Athletic Depart- ment. Athletic Council To Be Formed By NCCC Coach NCCC Coach Roy E. Sommer today announced plans for forma- tion of an athletic council de- signed \to stimulate student In- terest in intramurla sport act- ivities.\ The Council, he said, will consist of an elected rep- resentative from each of the College sports clubs. Counci members will set rules and regulations for all intramural sports, he explained, adding, \The Council can exist only if students show interest and give full support to all intramural projects.\ Additional functions to be assigned to the Sport Council include organization and spon- sorship of pre-game pep rallies, provision of all forms of recrea- tion for NCCC students, and sup- ervision of sports parties. A Council organizational meet- ing will be scheduled \within the next few weeks\ according to the NCCC Coach. NCCC Netters Slated For 23-Game Series Victorious Soosor Pronisod The NCCC basketball team, which posted a 4-9 mark In its 19G3-64 season, will take on a 23-game schedule beginning Nov- ember 20. The team may com- pete as a member of the Empire State Junior College Basketball Conference during the upcoming series, although this is not yet official, Coach Roy E. Sommer said today. A team organizational meeting, open to all NCCC Freshmen and Sophomores, has been slated for 2 P.M. Monday, Sept. 28 in Room 105 M, he said. \Last year,\ Coach Sommer told an ENTRICYHERALD sports writer, \We had a late start in forming our team and, quite frankly, we had a limited number of experienced players to choose from.\ \This year, it's different. We start with a victory and continue right through the season,\ he promised. Returning NCCC lettermen in- clude Sophomores Ben Dragan, Eric Baker and Leon Smith. Coach Sommer declined to say whether they would be in the starting squad this year, explain- ing, \It's early yet. They're experienced, but let's wait until after the try-outs. Then, we'll know.\ Eleven of the 23-games on the NCCC intercollegiate schedule will be played at home. The remainder have been program- med for host floors in New York State and Canada. College 'Hi Sports Eligibility Rules Outlined For New Season In order to qualify for partici- pation in any intercollegiate sport activity, NCCC students must ful- fill the following requirements: \Carry and be passing, as a reg- ularly matriculated student, at least ten hours or units of college work during the semester of part- icipation. . .and, have a grade- point index of 1.50 or better. All hours of a completed course must be counted.\ \Any student who initially and successively enrolls for less than ten hours or units of college work will be classified as a part-time student. A part-time student can become eligible by enrolling in ten or more hours or units of study.\ \Any student who enrolls at NCCC while a season of any sport is in progress, as deter- mined by the publicized schedule, will be ineligible to participate in that sport for the remainder of the season.\ Additional requirements will be detailed on a \Rules of Eligibil- ity\ list to be posted on student bulletin boards. On the intramural level \at least eight\ sports will be offered. Currently planned is tennis, golf, bowling, table tennis \and a few surprises.\ Other intramural plans will be formulated by the NCCC Athletic Council in the very near future, Coach Summer indicated. Seems that a devout Southerner ( is there any other kind? ) attended a banquet, and next day a friend asked him who all had been there.
