St. Francis marking centennial St. Francis Xavier, Rochester — The parish will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 5 p.m. A banquet at the Mapledale Party House, 1020 Maple Street, will follow the Mass. Group travels to El Salvador Corpus Christi, Rochester — Four parishioners will accompany a $5,000 food shipment to Corpus Christi's sister parish in Santa Marta, El Salvador, this month. Joseph and Lillian Piersante left for El Sal- vador on Sunday, Oct 2, to make arrangements for the rest of the group. Paul Kuppinger and Sister Kathy Weider, a chaplain at Nazareth College, will leave on Friday, Oct. 7. Refugees returned to Santa Marta fast Oc- tober after fleeing to Honduras in 1980 follow- ing a Salvadoran military sweep through the area. According to a parish spokeswoman, the townspeople invited the delegation to celebrate the first anniversary of their return. The program is housed in the new par- ish center building. • • • Nazareth Academy senior Jacquelyn Sojka has won the 1987/88 Bausch & Lomb Science Award. The award, which is given at approxi- mately 6,000 participating schools in the Unit- ed States, is presented to the student who achieved the highest academic standing in science subjects during his or her junior year. As a winner of the award, Sojka is eligible for one of several four-year Bausch & Lomb Science Scholarships at the -University of Rochester. • • • Good Shepherd School, part of the Rush Henrietta Catholic School System, has added Felicia Clark to its faculty as a resource teacher. She has a master's degree in special education and has several years experience both as a regu- lar classroom teacher and as a special educa- tion teacher. At the school, she will begin a new program which will give students extra help with reading-and math. -' 1 Neighbors St. Joseph's Villa has announced the elec- tion of four new members to its board of direc- tors. They are: Susan Riedman Holliday, president and publisher of the Rochester Busi- ness Journal, for a three-year term; Ralph DeStephano, Jr., president of Buckman's Dairy, Inc., for a two-year term; Wilfred J. Schrouder, Jr., vice president of employee re- lations and public affairs for Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation, and Dr. Esteita Nor- wood Evans, director of the social work pro- gram at Nazareth College, both for one-year terms. • • • At a September 15 reception held by the Catholic Family Center's Restart Substance Abuse Services to honor volunteers who par- ticipate in the Rochester products UAW/United Way Jobsbank program, Bobby DeLappa of the Jobsbank Programreceived an award from the New York State Division of Substance Abuse Services for special service in the field of substance abuse. William H. Mathews has been named associ- ate director of development and director of major gifts at St. John Fisher College. Previ- ously, Mathews had been on the development staff at the Rochester Institute of Technology for nine years, had worked for two years as a researcher/writer with Rochester's Center for Governmental Research, and was the manag- er/editor of publications for the Society of Chartered Property/Casualty Underwriters in Media, Pa. A graduate of Hobart College with a master's degree in English from New York University, Mathews has served as the direc- tor of the Rochester International Friendship Council, chair of the International Students Scholarship Committee, and is current chair of the board of directors of the Rochester Con- federation of International Organizations. He is also the author of a book, Korea in Pictures.
